Published with permission by Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Pest Control - 1 Policy 805 Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Custody Manual Pest Control 805.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE The purpose of this policy is to establish inspection, identification and eradication processes designed to keep pests controlled in accordance with the requirements established by all applicable laws, ordinances, and regulations of the local public health entity. 805.2 POLICY It is the policy of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office pests be controlled within the facility. The Assistant Sheriff of Custody Operations or the authorized designee shall be responsible for developing and implementing this policy, in cooperation with the Director of Custody Health Services and the local public health entity, for the sanitation and control of pests, and to establish medical protocols for treating incarcerated person's clothing, personal effects, and living areas, with specific guidelines for treating an infested incarcerated person (15 CCR 1212; 15 CCR 1264). 805.3 PEST CONTROL SERVICES The Division Commander or the authorized designee shall be responsible for procuring the services of a licensed pest control professional to perform inspections of the facility at least monthly and to treat areas as required to ensure that pests are controlled. Staff will notify the Sheriff's Office Operations Unit or the County Facilities and Fleet Department if pest control services are needed between regularly scheduled monthly services and inspections. The facility's Operations Unit staff will act as a liaison between facility staff and FAF staff for the purpose of obtaining pest control services. 805.4 PREVENTION AND CONTROL Most infestations are spread by direct contact with an infected person or with infested clothing and bedding. Incarcerated persons with lice or mites should be treated with approved pediculicides as soon as the infestation is identified to avoid spreading it. Clothing, bedding, and other property that is suspected of being infested shall either be removed from the facility or cleaned and treated by the following methods, as appropriate or as directed by the pest control provider or the Responsible Physician (15 CCR 1264): • Washing in water at 140 degrees for 20 minutes • Tumbling in a clothes dryer at 140 degrees for 20 minutes • Dry cleaning • Storing in sealed plastic bags for 30 days • Treating with an insecticide specifically labeled for this purpose Docusign Envelope ID: 1B2A8B24-F0CB-4AB4-B215-CD5475916DA5 Copyright Lexipol, LLC 2024/09/26, All Rights Reserved. Published with permission by Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Pest Control - 2 Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Custody Manual Pest Control 805.5 PEST CONTAMINATED CLOTHING AND LINENS Clothing, blankets, and linens that are soiled with contaminants, such as blood and feces shall be secured in plastic red contaminated laundry bags. Urine, vomit or infected with vermin, clothing and linens, such as crabs, scabies or lice will be secured in plastic blue contaminated laundry bags and transported to the designated storage bin for conta minated laundry. The Sheriff's Office' contracted laundry service will pick -up the storage bins with contaminated laundry once a week at a predetermined scheduled time at the jail facilities. Staff will use standard precautions and available personal protective equipment when bagging or transporting contaminated laundry items. In the event that Incarcerated Person Workers or other incarcerated persons are bagging contaminated laundry items, staff will maintain continuous supervision of this process and ensure that standard precautions and available personal protective equipment are used by the incarcerated persons to promote their safety. 805.6 LABELING AND SECURE STORAGE OF COMPOUNDS Containers of pest exterminating compounds shall be conspicuously labeled for identification of contents.
