Wellness Program
242.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
The purpose of this policy is to provide guidance on establishing and maintaining a proactive
wellness program for Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office staff.
The wellness program takes a holistic approach to staff wellness, focused on physical fitness,
mental health, and overall well -being.
242.2 POLICY
It is the policy of the Office to prioritize staff wellness to ensure fitness for duty and promote a
healthy quality of life for staff members. To achieve this, the Office will maintain a wellness
program that provides proactive wellness resources, ongoing support, and a health -focused work
environment.
242.3 WELLNESS COORDINATOR
The Wellness Program will be managed by a qualified Wellness Coordinator appointed by
the Sheriff. The coordinator shall report directly to the Sheriff or the authorized designee and shall
collaborate with wellness partners, as appropriate, to fulfill the responsibilities of the position,
including but not limited to:
(a) Identifying properly credentialed and qualified wellness support providers
1. As appropriate, selected providers shall be trained and experienced in providing
mental wellness support and counseling to public safety personnel.
(b) Facilitating the delivery of wellness information, training, and support through methods
tailored to the specific situation
(c) Providing evident -informed health and wellness resources
(d) Providing one -on-one coaching sessions, in the following topics:
1. Health and wellness coaching
2. Nutrition
3. Fitness programming
4. Sleep training
5. Creating connection and communication
6. Stress management
242.4 WELLNESS UNIT
The Wellness Unit aims to promote the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of all
department personnel, ensuring they are equipped to safely and effectively perform their duties
and enjoy physical and mental health that allows them to thrive on and off the job. Policy

(a) Assessment and Monitoring:
1. Track wellness trends and identify areas needing improvement.
(b) Wellness Programs:
1. Develop and implement wellness initiatives on the six pillars of health: fitness
and movement, stress modulation, nutrition, sleep, social connection and
purpose, and financial health.
2. Facilitate access to resources such as counseling, peer support, subject matter
experts, and wellness seminars.
(c) Education and Training:
1. Organize and teach training sessions on health and well -being topics.
2. Promote awareness of the importance of health and well -being and available
resources.
(d) Policy Development:
1. Collaborate with department leadership to create policies that support wellness
initiatives and address health and wellbeing concerns.
2. Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards regarding deputy wellness
and mental health services.
(e) Evaluation and Feedback:
1. Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of wellness programs and initiatives,
gathering feedback from personnel.
2. Adjust programs based on data and feedback to ensure continuous
improvement.
(f) Referring to Peer Support:
1. Provide a safe space for deputies to seek help without fear of stigma or
repercussions.
2. Refer staff to the Peer Support Team, as needed.
(g) Reporting:
1. The Wellness Unit will report to the Assistant Sheriff of Custody Operations or
an authorized designee of the Wellness Unit and the Sheriff, ensuring alignment
with departmental goals and objectives.
242.5 POLICY REVIEW
The policy shall be reviewed at least once every two years.
