2011.1 POLICY
The Honor Guard Detail serves as official representatives of the Chief of Police and the Santa
Ana Police Department at ceremonies, special events, and law enforcement funerals.
2011.2 CHAIN OF COMMAND
The Honor Guard Detail is assigned to the Office of the Chief of Police. A designee appointed
by the Chief of Police will hold administrative responsibilities for the detail as Honor Guard
Commander. The daily operations of the detail such as deployment, scheduling, training and the
maintenance of unit records will be the responsibility of the Honor Guard Sergeant.
2011.3 SELECTION OF PERSONNEL
Sworn officers from the rank of Sergeant and below are eligible for assignment to the Honor
Guard Detail. The Honor Guard Detail is comprised of twelve (12) sworn officers and one (1)
detail sergeant. Suitability for the detail will be based upon, but not limited to a complete review
of the applicant's personnel record, work performance, experience, physical condition, uniform
appearance, and recommendations from supervisors. Final selection for assignment to the detail
will be at the discretion of the Honor Guard Commander.
The Honor Guard Detail is an ancillary assignment, and as such, is secondary to each officer's
primary assignment. Any misconduct or unsatisfactory performance in an officer's primary
assignment can be considered grounds for removal from the Honor Guard Detail.
2011.4 TRAINING
Honor Guard Detail members are expected to attend training as scheduled, except when staffing
needs or other work conflicts (court, investigation call-outs, etc.) prohibit attendance. The Honor
Guard Detail will be afforded quarterly training days, not to exceed four days annually. Officers
must obtain their respective supervisor's approval prior to attending any scheduled training or
other Honor Guard deployment.
2011.5 UNIFORM AND EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE
Honor Guard Detail members will be issued a complete Honor Guard Uniform with insignia and
"Honor Guard" badge. Corfam shoes are required and shall be worn at the cost of each member.
All Honor Guard uniform items and equipment are to be maintained in excellent condition. Each
officer is responsible for the maintenance and serviceability of their issued property as outlined in
the Uniform Regulations Policy. Dry cleaning is at the expense of each member.
Each officer shall maintain a professional and well-groomed appearance in compliance with the
Personal Appearance Standards Policy.
