510.01 UNSUPERVISED FIELD INVESTIGATION 3-19-20 PURPOSE To establish procedures for unsupervised field investigations. POLICY It shall be the policy of the Sacramento Police Department to require detectives, in the absence of a supervisor, to log on with Communications Division when conducting field investigations. PROCEDURE A. DEFINITION 1. UNSUPERVISED FIELD INVESTIGATION – A field investigation conducted during normal working hours without a supervisor's presence, or on approved overtime and in the absence of a supervisor. 2. SIGN -IN/OUT BOARDS – A unit status board that detectives can indicate their location during field investigations and/or when away from the office for an extended period of time. B. PROCEDURE FOR LOGGING ON 1. When a detective conducts a field investigation, the detective shall advise his/her supervisor of the circumstances surrounding the investigation and what resources will be needed. 2. The detective will log on with Communications, advise of his/her location, and be available by cellphone and/or radio (if needed). 3. Select the patrol channel assigned to the geographic area of the field investigation. 4. Detectives shall advise Communications of the following: a. When the investigation moves to an area covered by another radio channel. b. The location of all known or potential suspect contacts. c. When he/she has concluded the field investigation and is logging off. 5. When detectives are in the field, they shall comply with G.O. 525.07 Body -Worn Camera policy.
