SACRAMENTO POLICE DEPARTMENT COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTIVE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTIVE 500.02 Page 1 of 14 500.02 POLICE INCIDENT TYPE CODES 1-31-23 PURPOSE The purpose of this Communications Directive is to establish incident type codes to be utilized when entering incidents into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System and/or during Manual Mode. POLICY It shall be the policy of the Communications Division to use incident type codes to describe the nature, priority, weapon(s) involvement, and time element of calls for service. PROCEDURE A. REQUIREMENTS 1. The "Type" field of an incident mask requires the entry of a predefined incident type code. 2. Use of any code not listed in this directive or not approved by the Communications Division manager will result in delays in incident entry and officer response. 3. The CAD system has assigned a predefined priority to each incident type code. B. INCIDENT TYPE CODES 1. Alpha suffixes are attached to various incident type codes to clearly define the circumstances of calls for service. Alpha suffixes include, but are not limited to: a. A = S ilent alarm OR with injuries . b. C = CSI call. c. P = In progress . d. PA = In progress with injuries . e. R = R inging alarm OR report call. f. RF = Referral . g. T = T ime element . h. TA = T ime element with injuries . i. W = W eapon involved. 2. Incident Type Code Priorities a. Each incident type code has been assigned a priority based on the definitions listed in General Order 510.04 (Dispatching Sequence of Assignment ). b. A dispatcher has the discretion to lower or raise the priority of an incident if the specific circumstances warrant the change. If a predefined priority is changed, the reason shall be clearly noted in the text of the incident. c. To change a priority on a specific incident, ente r the appropriate priority number in the "Priority" field of the incident mask. 3. Combined Incident Type Codes a. Combined incident type codes shall be used to create police/fire or police/fire/ambulance incidents. b. Combined incident type codes alert the radio dispatcher that the call taker entering the incident will notify Sacramento Regional Fire Dispatch. c. To utilize a combined incident type code, the following steps shall be taken: (1) Complete an incident mask entering a combined incident type code in the “Call Type ” field. (2) Depress the <Enter> key SACRAMENTO POLICE DEPARTMENT COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTIVE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTIVE 500.02 Page 2 of 14 2) After the CAD system verifies the location and checks for duplicate incidents, CAD will generate a police call for service. “ SPECIAL SERVICE RECOMMENDED FOR THIS CALL TYPE: FA” will appear in red letters at the very bottom of the newly generated incident. This is the only noti fication the call taker will receive to notify Sacramento Regional Fire Dispatch. 3) The call taker shall be responsible for notifying Sacramento Regional Fire Dispatch by transferring the caller directly or by advising Fire directly by landline. Call takers may also seek assistance from a fellow dispatcher or a supervisor when directly notifying Fire is not possible. C. COMMUNICATIONS PERSONNEL RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Communications personnel are required to understand, memorize, and correctly apply all incident type codes and corresponding priorities. D. INCIDENT TYPE CODE AND PRIORITY LIST (attached) 1. The " INCIDENT TYPE CODE " column lists those incident type codes that are accepted by the CAD System. 2. The "P RI" column lists the predefined priority of each incident type code. 3. The “D EFINITION ” column defines each incident type code. 4. The “ INCIDENT FOR DISPATCH” column indicates whether the incident type code generates an incident for all units to be dispatched or an incident for referral. 5. The "UNIT AVL " column indicates whether police units can be preempted to respond to a higher priority incident. (See General Order 510.04 -“Dispatching Sequence of Assignment”.) 6. The " COMMENTS " column reflects information for utilizing specific incident type codes.
