Property Bureau Page 1 of 2 55/02.0 (REV 2/96) MAILING PROPERTY The purpose of this order is to s tate the circumstances which w ould permit or prevent the mailing of property and the procedures to be used when prop erty is mailed. I. Circumstances that Permit Mailing of Property A. Due to the lack of physical c ontrol and the cost factor invo lved, mailing property is to be discouraged wh enever reasonably possible. B. Property must meet all permanen t release criteria (refer to Operations Order 57/00.0) in order to be acceptable for mailing. C. A claimant requesting that pr operty be mailed must live outs ide Sacramento County. D. Written authorization to mail property must be sent by a cla imant or agency and received by the Proper ty Bureau before the property can be mailed. E. A claimant requesting that a f irearm be mailed must contact their local law enforcement agency and have that agency send written confirmati on that they will accept the firea rm on behalf of the claimant. II. Property that Will Not Be Mailed A. Property that has not m et all release criteria. B. Property that is being rel eased on a temporary basis. C. Money. D. Weapons, other than firearms to another agency, and destruct ive devices. E. Firearms are not to be mailed directly to a claimant. F. Property that is of a size or weight which prohibits the use of normal mailing procedures. Property Bureau Page 2 of 2 55/02.0 (REV 2/96) III. Mailing Procedures A. When written authorization to mail property is received, it is to be attached to the property receipt/report. B. The property is then pulled and packaged appropriately for m ailing or shipping. C. When the property has been pa ckaged, the next available line in the “Declaration of Ownership” section will be completed. 1. List the item number(s). 2. Enter “mailed” and ei ther US Postal Service or Greyhound in the “Release To” section. 3. The name and badge number of the property officer will be en tered. 4. Enter the date. 5. Indicate if photographs were taken. D. Items estimated to be over $50.00 in value wil l be insured t o their full estimated value. E. Items estimated to be over $50.00 in value will be sent cert ified mail, return receipt requested. F. Depending on the size and/or w eight of the package, the prop erty transportation officer will deliv er the package to either the S heriff’s mailroom or Greyhound for shipping. G. Firearms will be sent to other agencies using the US Postal Service. Per postal regulations, the outside pac kaging will not indicate the contents. Insurance tags will stipul ate the dollar value only. H. Insurance stubs, return receipt stubs, other tags, etc., wil l be attached to the property receipt/report.
