Property Bureau Page 1 of 3 54/04.0 (REV 2/96) BICYCLE PROCESSING AND STORAGE The purpose of this order is to d escribe the procedures used to process and store bicycles held by the Sheriff’s Property Bureau. I. Bicycle Processing A. Each bicycle must have a r eport number. In addition, each bi cycle is assigned a bicycle number. The bi cycle number is also noted on the property report. 1. Inspect the bicycle for a seri al number or any other identif ying marks. 2. Obtain a good descrip tion of the bicycle. 3. Indicate if a finder’s claim has been requested. 4. Log all information obtai ned on the property report. B. Each bicycle will hav e a completed tag attached. Tags (color -coded by month), will include the report num ber, bar code label, bicycle number, and if applicable, “FC” for finder’s claim. C. Enter the report number, case type, incident type, date, cat egory code, and name of the officer submi tting the bicycle on the bar code reader. D. Complete the appropriate line in the chain of possession sec tion of the property report (refer to O perations Order 54/01.0). E. Locate the bicycle to an appropr iate location using the bar code scanner. F. The information obtained for the property report will then b e logged into the bicycle log. The log shall include the following informatio n, as available: 1. Report number 2. Bicycle number 3. Make Property Bureau Page 2 of 3 54/04.0 (REV 2/96) 4. Color 5. Size 6. Style (boy’s or girl’s bike) 7. Seat color 8. Frame number 9. Other distinctive markings 10. Pick up date G. Each bicycle with a serial number will be ru n through the CL ETS system to determine if it has been repor ted stolen (see the computer i nstruction manual for operation procedures). If the computer indicates a m atch, the following will apply: 1. Found Bicycles a. If the stolen report was tak en by the Sheriff’s Department, order a copy of the report from Records, verify the match, cancel the CLETS stolen ent ry, and send a letter to the owner. b. If the stolen report was taken by another agency, place a “locate” on the CLETS stolen r eport, enter the bicycle into the CLETS system as found, and send a letter to the originating agency. 2. Evidence Bicycles a. If the stolen report was tak en by the Sheriff’s Department, order a copy of both reports from Records, verify the match, cancel the CLETS stolen entry , enter the bicycle into the CLETS system as evidence, and send a request for release status to the appropriate detective bureau. b. If the stolen report was taken by another agency, place a “locate” on the CLETS stol en entry, enter the bicycle as evidence, and send the reques t for release status to the appropriate detective bureau. 3. Submit the property report to R ecords for data entry and fil ing. Route the white copy to Records, if applicable. Property Bureau Page 3 of 3 54/04.0 (REV 2/96) II. Bicycle Storage A. Bicycles are hung in rows, by month, in the designated bicyc le area. B. Evidence bicycles are hung in the loft area of the bicycle r oom.
