Property Bureau Page 1 of 2 54/02.0 (REV 2/97) FIREARM PROCESSING AND STORAGE The purpose of this order is to d escribe the procedures used to process firearms for storage and the firearms storage procedures used by the Propert y Bureau. I. Firearms Processing A. Firearms and the correspondi ng property receipt/report forms are sent directly to the gun room for processing. B. The property officer assigned to firearms shall: 1. Verify the firearm is unloaded. 2. Log the firearm on the property report (refer to Operations Order 54/01.0). 3. Complete a property tag using the designated color for the y ear. Print the report number and item number on the tag. Place the corresponding barcode label on t he tag and attach the tag to th e firearm. 4. Verify the property report c ontains the correct serial numbe r, brand, model number, and caliber. 5. Record any distinctive marki ngs on the firearm on the proper ty report. 6. Determine if the firearm is of legal length (Section 12020.7 [d] PC). If legal, this information is to be noted on the property repor t. 7. Determine if the serial num ber, brand, model number, or iden tifying marks have been altered or r emoved (Sections 12090 and 12091 PC). If tampering has occurred , so note on the property report. 8. Note any damage to the fir earm on the property report. 9. Note all detachable component s on the property report. 10. Place a barcode label on t he property report with the corre sponding label on the firearms tag. Property Bureau Page 2 of 2 54/02.0 (REV 2/97) 11. Enter the report number, case type, incident type, date, ca tegory code, and the name of the officer submitting the firearm into t he barcode reader. 12. Locate the firearm on an appr opriate shelf using the barcod e reader. 13. Submit the property report to P roperty Bureau clerical pers onnel for data entry and filing. II. Firearms Storage A. Long guns are stored in gun racks specifically designed to s tore such items. B. Handguns are stored on racks spec ifically designed to store such items. C. Handguns requiring s pecial handling; i.e., ID work, contamin ation, etc., are stored in designated bins.
