Bicycle Patrol
The purpose of this General Order i s to establish policy for th e assignment, training and
operation of the Sherif f’s Bicycle Patrol.
I. General
The Sheriff’s Bicycle Patrol com prises regular sworn and reserv e officers having
primary assignment elsewhere in this Department. The unit will be called out for training
or special enforcement as an element of Patrol Services.
II. Required Qualifications
A. Regular sworn officers will hav e completed the Patrol Servic es Field
Training Program, or the Patrol S ervices Volunteer Field Traini ng
Program.
B. Reserve officers will have comp leted the Reserve Officers St ructured Field
Training Program.
C. Officers serve with the appr oval of their division commander .
D. Officers will meet t he certification requi rements establishe d for bicycle
operations, as established by the Division of Training and Rese rve Forces.
III. Program Administration
A. The Chief Deputy for Patrol S ervices will appoint a Sheriff’ s Bicycle Patrol
Commander.
1. The Bicycle Comm ander will be responsible for the management
and direction of the unit.
2. Call-outs for training or enforcement will be made through t he
bicycle commander or his designee.
3. Division commanders may approv e bicycle operations which use
officers under their command who have met the required
qualifications under Section II above.

4. Except for approved off-duty em ployment, all requests for di rected
Bicycle Patrol and community ev ents will be through the bicycle
commander.
IV. Deployment
A. Routinely, bicycle officers will work in team s of three or m ore. No fewer
than two will be deploy ed without the specific authorization of the patrol
division commander, or the bicycl e commander. This includes off -duty
employment.
B. Certified bicycle officers are authorized to use their bicyc les while working
off-duty employment.
C. Except for approved off-duty employment, reserve officers wo rking
bicycles will be under the direc t supervision of a regular offi cer.
D. While working bicycles, all o fficers will wear the Sheriff’s Department
bicycle uniform.
E. The bicycle commander will mainta in a roster of all certifie d officers
authorized to use bicycles.
F. Bicycles will be operated in a manner that takes into consid eration safety
and the needs of the specific operations.
V. Budget
A. Salaries and overtime for unit members will remain in their regular budget
unit, unless otherwise approved by a division commander.
B. Overtime may be paid, only dur ing a call-out situation, with prior approval
of the Chief Deputy for Patrol S ervices of the owning division commander.
