Airport Door Alarms
The purpose of this Order is to establish policy and procedure for responding to door
alarms at the Sacramento Inte rnational Airport terminals.
I. General
The requirement to establish and carry out measures for control ling entry to
secured areas of the airport is federally mandated by the Depar tment of
Homeland Security (DHS) and Trans portation Security Administrat ion (TSA).
The Airport security standard m andates a two minute response to any door alarm
leading to the sterile operati onal area of the airport. Airpor t Operations is
primarily responsible for handling this duty. Deputies may be asked to respond if
Airport Operations is unable to h andle the ala rm. If respondin g, deputies should
do so in a timely manner in an at tempt to meet the two minute r esponse time.
II. Procedures
A. The Communications Cent er (Comm Center) will ask SSD pe rsonnel if
they are available to respond to the “door held” or “door forc ed” alarms.
B. If SSD personnel are able to , they will respond to the locat ion of the door
that has an activated alarm, a s quickly and safely as possible.
C. SSD personnel responding to the door alarm will advise the C omm Center
when they have arrived on scene and if anyone is standing by w hen they
arrive. 1. If responding to a door “ HELD ” alarm:
a. Close and/or reset the door; advise the Comm Center.
b. Look for badged personnel l ocated in the area.
c. Recite employee badge num ber to the Comm Center for
badge verification.
d. Verify that the individual /employee matches the badge
photograph; advise the Comm Center.

Airport Bureau e. Provide an explanation to the Comm Center of what
happened to cause the alarm to activate. f. Advise the proper door p rocedures to badged employee.
. 2. If responding to an audible door “ FORCED ” alarm:
a. Close and/or reset the door; advise the Comm Center.
b. Recite employee badge num ber to the Comm Center for
badge verification. If the badged individual is not standing
by the door, request additional information from the Comm
Center regarding the door alarm and the person who last
swiped their airport badge; t hen look for and locate badged
employee for badge verifica tion through Comm Center.
c. Verify that the individual /employee matches the badge
photograph; advise t he Comm Center.
(1) Provide an explanatio n to the Comm Center of what
happened to cause the alarm to activate.
(2) Advise proper door procedures to badged employee. d. SSD personnel will comply when directed by the Comm
Center to conduct additional se curity measures on badged
personnel before leaving the scene of a door alarm, such as
having a badged employee re-s wipe their airport badge at a
door.
3. If at any time the airport badge that the individual produce s
does not have a positive face match:
a. Confiscate the badge and escort them off the AOA or sterile
a r e a . b. Advise the Comm Center and have the Comm Center notify
an SSD and Airport Operations supervisor. c. If necessary, request Airport Operations personnel. d. Take appropriate law enforcement actions. 4. If at any time the airport badge that the individual produce s is
expired: a. Confiscate the badge and escort them off the AOA or sterile
area, if necessary.

b. Advise the individual tha t they need to report to the
Badging/ID Office as soon as po ssible to take care of their
expired badge. They can continue working their shift at the
airport without an airport badge, but must be under constant
escort while on the secured side. c. Advise the Comm Center. d. Take the badge to the Badging /ID Office. (Du ring after
hours, drop the badge into t he drop box outside of the
Badging/ID Office.) 5. When responding to door alarms , always check the area
surrounding the door. If anyone is in the area and/or anythin g
appears odd, such as passenger s or unbadged personnel located
in the vicinity with or withou t other airport personnel presen t,
challenge them. a. Ask them who they are, why they are there, and who are
they supposed to be with. b. If necessary, escort persons off the AOA or sterile area.
c. Locate the badged individual r esponsible for the escort if
passengers or unbadged personnel are not being properly
escorted and advise them of proper escort procedures.
d. Contact a supervisor and if necessary, request that Airport
Operations personnel respond.
