Work Release
Work Project Transportation Vehicles
Drivers’ Daily Vehicle Inspection Report
The purpose of this Order is to o utline the procedure for the u se, care, and operation of
County vehicles used to transport Sheriff’s Work Project partic ipants.
I. General
Proper use, care, and operation of any participant transportati on vehicle helps
ensure participant and officer sa fety. Additio nally, it prolon gs the life of the
vehicle and reduces costs and ex penses to the Work Program. Wo rk Project
officers are directly responsib le and accountable for the prope r use and care of
the transportation vehicles.
II. Vehicle Operation
A. Prior to operating any parti cipant vehicle assigned or on lo an to the Work
Project Program, the officer shall:
1. Have a current and appropriate operator’s license for the ve hicle in
their possession.
2. In the case of a Class B vehi cle (bus), the officer must hav e a
current Class B operator’s licens e and valid medical certificat e.
3. Complete the Daily Vehicle Inspection Report (Appendix A)
required for each vehicle.
4. Vehicles found to be mechanica lly defective or damaged to th e
extent it might be unrelia ble shall not be operated.
5. Ensure all tools are stored in a safe manner.
III. Vehicle Return
A. Have the vehicle fuel tank full.
B. Have the interior of the v ehicle clean and have the exterior washed.
C. Return all broken tools or t ools in disrepair to the Work Pr oject storage
trailer for repair or disposal.

Work Release IV. Exercise Safety and Obey Laws
A. Work Project officer s are required to exercise safety precau tions, obey all
California code laws and Departm ent regulations regarding the u se of
vehicles assigned or on loan.
V. Vehicle Accidents
A. In the case of an accident, p rocedures outlined in General O rder 6/03
shall be followed.
VI. Vehicle Intended Use
A. Work Project vehicles are i ntended as participant transporta tion vehicles.
They are not emergency vehicles and will not be used in pursuit s or
vehicle stops.
VII. Supervisor Responsibility
A. The Work Program fiel d supervisor shall:
1. Coordinate with C ounty garage personnel regarding service an d
repair of participant transportation vehicles.
2. Prepare a monthly mileage report on all vehicles requiring v ehicle
service reports.
