Correctional Services Page 1 of 3 2/06.0 (Rev 5/16) Work Release-SWP Ill and Injured Work Project Participants The purpose of this order is to o utline the procedure to provid e care for ill or injured participants who are on th e Sheriff’s Work Project Prog ram. I. General A. Medical care is not available at Work Project field sites or at the Work Release Facility. It is t he responsibility of every parti cipant to report all injuries or illness so the responsible duty officer may make arrangements to provide needed medical assistance. General Order 26/03 outlines emplo yee injury/illness reporting requirements. II. Emergency Treatment A. If a participant requires imm ediate treatment for injury/ill ness incurred at the job site, the re sponsibility of obtaining treat ment rests with the duty officer. B. For participants who require such immediate treatment for injury/illness incurred at a Work Project job site or Work Rele ase facility: 1. The participant shall be sen t by ambulance to the nearest medical facility equipped to handle the emergency. 2. An officer need not accompany the participant. 3. The officer is responsible fo r notifying the Work Project sergeant. a. If the sergeant is unavailabl e, the officer shall notify the field coordinator of the injury or illness as soon as possible. 4. The booking officer will be not ified of the participant’s injury/illness and will evaluate any change in custody status. Correctional Services Page 2 of 3 2/06.0 (Rev 5/16) Work Release-SWP III. Non-Emerg ency Treatment A. Participants who require eme rgency treatment for an injury o r illness that occurred while in cu stody shall be transported to an approved medical care facility by the field transportation offi cer or the field coordinator. IV. Participants Refusing Em ergency Medical Treatment A. If the participant refuses tr eatment at the approved medical facility, the participant must be advised t hat Sacramento County will not pay for medical expe nses incurred. B. Transportation: Participants who choose to obtain transport ation to a medical facility of their choi ce, at their own expense, may: 1. Transport themselves (having a valid driver’s license and demonstrating proof of vehicle insurance coverage); 2. Request that a friend or fam ily member transport them; 3. Use a taxi; or 4. Be transported by a Work Proj ect transportation officer, if available staffing is sufficient. V. Minor Injury or Illness A. Participants who request medica l treatment for a Work Projec t related injury or illness of a minor nature will be attended to by the duty officer when the fo llowing conditions exist: 1. No medical att ention is required. 2. Minor medical attention is needed which, under normal circumstances, could be self-administered. B. The duty officer shall obtai n any needed minor medical suppl ies from a County provided first aid k it issued to each Work Projec t site or duty officer. VI. Non Work Project Related Illness A. Participants who request medica l treatment for a non Work Pr oject related illness will be advised by the duty officer to make the ir own medical arrangements. Injury/illness r eports for participant s shall be prepared by the duty officer when any Work Project re lated injury or illness occurs. These reports shall be distribut ed as directed by General Order 26/03. Completed reports will be forwarded to the Work Project sergeant for review prior to distribution. 1.
