Page 1 of 6 16/21 (New 3/07) Request for Crime Lab or ID Lab Examination The purpose of this General Order i s to describe the procedure to request examination and/or analysis of evidence by t he County Crime Lab or Sheriff’ s ID Bureau. I. General A. Types of examination/analys is to be done at the County Crim e Lab 1. Blood work, toxicology, typing 2. DNA collection, analysis, comparison 3. Tool mark comparison 4. Firearm, casing, fragment c omparison, gun shot residue B. Types of examination/analysis to be done at the Sheriff’s I dentification Lab 1. Trace evidence collection 2. Latent developi ng and comparison 3. Blood drying 4. DNA Collection 5. P h o t o s II. Procedure A. Book property as usual, taki ng precautions to protect the ev idence from contamination. B. Complete the required form 1. The DA7 form shall be used for submissions to the County Cri me Lab. 2. The CL96 (IBIS) form shall be used for submissions of firear ms, live ammo, casings and projectiles fo r comparison to the County Crim e Lab. 3. The ID Lab Request shall be used for items submitted to the Sheriff’s Identification Lab. Page 2 of 6 16/21 (New 3/07) C. For submissions to t he County Crime Lab: 1. Fax a copy of the DA7 and/or CL96 form to the County Crime L ab (916) 874-9620 and direct to the a ttention of one of the follow ing: a. DNA Supervisor b. Comparison Supervisor c. Toxicology Supervisor d. Narcotics Supervisor 2. Property Bureau personnel will transport the evidence to the County Crime Lab when the cr ime lab has approved the examination/analysis request and requests the evidence. 3. Property Bureau personnel wil l automatically send narcotics for analysis on all narcotics cases w here an arrest was made. Any other narcotics analysis requests need to be sent to the County Crime Lab. D. For submissions to the Sher iff’s Identification Lab: 1. Attach the ID Lab Request form to the evidence and book the evidence. 2. Property Bureau personnel will submit the evidence to the Sh eriff’s Identification Lab. 3. Note: Narcotics packaging needi ng to be processed for laten t fingerprints must be booked se parately from the narcotics. 4. If the evidence has already been booked, then fax or send a request to the ID Lab. E. Blood and Urine Tests 1. Blood and/or urine samples s hall be collected in an approved specimen collection kit. 2. Complete the entries on the collection kit box and drop the box in the locker at the Main Jail. 3. The County Crime Lab will retr ieve the collection kits from the Main Jail locker and process them. W hen the crime lab has finished the requested processing, they will b ook the collection kits into t he Property Bureau. 4. If a deputy books a blood or u rine collection kit into prope rty, they must include a Property Report/Rec eipt or complete an AFR entry . Page 3 of 6 16/21 (New 3/07) F. Rape, Suspect and Reference Kits 1. Rape, suspect and reference ki ts taken at UCD Medical Center will be submitted to the crime lab by UDC Medical Center personnel. When the crime lab has finished the requested processing, they will book the collection kits i nto the Property Bureau. 2. Rape, suspect and reference kits taken any other place will be booked into property with a Proper ty Report/Receipt or complete an AFR entry. Property Bureau pers onnel will submit them to the County Crime Lab.
