Lost and Found Property
The purpose of this General Order i s to establish procedures fo r handling items lost or
found by an employee in and around the Sheriff’s Department fac ilities.
I. General
A central location should be established for deposit or inquiry relative to lost or
found property in and around a Sher iff’s Department building. Each division will
establish an area and a contact p erson to provide this service when such
property would reasonably be presum ed by its nature and the cir cumstances to
have been lost by a Department e mployee. Should the items and/ or
circumstances indicate the true owner is not a Department membe r who has no
knowledge of or access to this retrieval system, such item shal l be turned into the
appropriate agency or jur isdiction. (NOTE: An employee acting in an official
capacity cannot place a finder’s claim.)
II. Procedure
A. Found Property
1. Sheriff’s Department employ ees finding property in and aroun d
Sheriff’s Department buildings o r the County garage, shall depo sit
the item at the nearest Sheri ff’s Department facility.
2. Each division will establis h a procedure to deposit found pr operty in
or around the building.
3. Property shall be kept for th irty (30) days. If at the end of that
period the owner has not been lo cated, a Property Receipt/Repor t
and AFR shall be completed and both the report and the item
placed into an evidence locker to be transported to the Propert y
Warehouse. Multiple items may be listed on one report form wit h a
description and date found in dicated for each item.
B. Lost Property
1. Inquiries regarding lost proper ty shall be made to the conta ct
person of the building the item w as lost or the Sheriff’s Prope rty
Warehouse.

description of the article in o rder to secure its release.
3. The owner shall follow the pr ocedure outlined by each Divisi on’s
policy.
