Page 1 of 6 13/02 (REV 12/12) Reserve Deputy Sheriff App lication and Selection The purpose of this General Order i s to describe the processes and requirements involved in becoming a Reserve Deputy Sheriff with the Sacramen to County Sheriff’s Department. I. Sheriff’s Department Sworn P ersonnel Application and Selecti on Process A. Who is Eligible – All sworn personnel of the Sa cramento County Sheriff’s Department who are retiring, tr ansferring (i.e., to the DA’s Office), or leaving Sacramento County employment, may become a Reserve De puty Sheriff with this department, p roviding they meet the standar ds and criteria that apply for the positi on of Reserve Deputy Sheriff. B. Minimum Qualifications – The minimum qualifications, under these circumstances, for a Reserve Deputy Sheriff are: 1 . Possession of a P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards and Training ) Basic Certificate AND 2 . Currently, a sworn member of the Sacrament o County Sheriff’s Department. C . Required Application fo r Reserve Deputy Status 1. An officer wishing to become a Reserve Deputy Sheriff with t his department must complete a Sacr amento County Sheriff’s Department, Intra –Department Co rrespondence (IDC) and submit i t to their Division Comm ander. (Exhibit “A”) Copies of the IDC are available from the Reserve Office at the Volunteer Service Bur eau or photocopy “Exhibit A” of this Order . D. Notification Time Frame – Not less than thirty (30) days prior to retiring, transferring, or leaving County Em ployment, the officer must no tify his/her Division Commander of h is/her intent to become a Reserve Deput y Sheriff with this department. E. Application Review Process – Table below describes t he application review process. This process mu st be completed 14 days prior t o the officer’s last day of employm ent with the depar tment. If it is not completed 14 days prior to the officers last day of employment , the officer MUST turn in his/her department issued equipment by or on his /her last day of Page 2 of 6 13/02 (REV 12/12) employment. Failure to comply with this order can result in disqualification. Stage Description 1 Officer submits IDC of intent to resign to his/her Division Commander. On the IDC, officer indicates their intent to becom e a Reserve Deputy Sheriff. This is submitted not less than thirty (30) days prior to leaving the department. 2 Division Commander  Completes appropriate section of the application, and  Forwards to Human Resources within 15 days of receipt from officer. Human Resources processes form and sends it through the Chain of Command. 3 The office of the Undersheriff will do the following:  Researches the status of the officer with both the Department’s Fair Employ ment Officer and Employee Relations Officer.  Ensures the officer has no Internal Affairs or Legal Affairs actions pending which may result in disciplinary action. NOTE: The Officer may not be the subject of any pending disciplinary action prior to being appointed as a Reserve Deput y Sheriff with this department. The Office of the Undersheriff completes the appropriate portio n of the application and forwards it to the Chief Deputy of Support Services within 15 days of receipt from the Office of the Unde rsheriff 4 Chief Deputy of Support Services indicates approval or disapproval on the application and presents it to Executive Sta ff. 5 Executive Staff indicates approval or disapproval on the application and forwards it to the Human Resources. 6 Human Resources notifies the officer, in writing, of the approval or disapproval of the application. 7 If the officer receives an approval letter, he/she shall c ontact Reserve Forces and make an appointment for Reserve Officer orientation. Upon completion of orientation, he/she will receiv e their ID cards, badge, and equipment. II. Other Person(s) Applicat ion and Selection Process A. Who May Apply – The following person(s) may apply for acceptance into the Reserve Deputy Sheriff program: 1 . Those who have never worked for the County of Sacramento in any c apacity, sworn or non-sworn 2 . Those who formerly worked for t he County of Sacramento Sheriff’ s D epartment in a sworn capacity 3 . A retired law enforcement office r from a California city, count y, or s t a t e l a w e n f o r c e m e n t agency as specified in Penal Code §830 B . Minimum Requirements – Before an appointment can be made as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for thos e persons not currently employ ed by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, each person must: Page 3 of 6 13/02 (REV 12/12) 1. Be a citizen of the United Stat es or a permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied fo r citizenship (Government Code §1031) 2. Be at least 18 years of age 3. Possess a high school diploma or GED 4. Possess a valid California driver’s license 5. Possess a P.O.S.T. basic academy c ertificate or its equivalent, that is not over three (3) years ol d, or have a break in peace off icer
