GENERAL ORDER
Sheriff’s Honor Guard
The purpose of this order is to e stablish the procedure for the operation of the Sheriff’s
Honor Guard. I. General
A. The Sheriff’s Honor Guard is c omprised of twenty (20) regula r sworn
deputies, including an appointed H onor Guard Coordinator, havin g
primary assignments in various d ivisions within the Sacramento Sheriff’s
Office. The Honor Guard operates under the Office of the Sheri ff and will
be used for funerals, memorial se rvices, special ceremonies, an d formal
functions as directed by the S heriff or his/her designee.
B. The Assistant to the Sheriff o r their designee will maintain a roster of all
deputies assigned to the S heriff’s Honor Guard.
C. All requests for the Honor G uard will be forwarded to the Ho nor Guard
Coordinator or the Employ ee Relations Officer ERO.
D. The Honor Guard Coordinator or ERO must receive approval pri or to
scheduling any Honor Guard event. A pproval may be granted by th e
Sheriff, Undersheriff, or A ssistant to the Sheriff.
E. Deputies must have approval from their respective division c ommanders
to participate in Honor Guard functions.
II. Duties and Responsibilities
A. Expectations of the Honor Guard Coordinator
1. Shall be appointed by the Assistant to the Sheriff.
2. Plan Honor Guard functions. 3. Consult with the Assistant to the Sheriff in planning functi ons.
4. Schedule deputies partici pating in operations.
Page 2 of 3 12/07 (NEW6/19) 5. Ensure activities are conduct ed in accordance with Sheriff’s Office
policies and orders.
B. Expectations of Honor Guard members
1. Participation in Honor Guar d practice is mandatory.
2. Participation in Honor Guar d functions is mandatory.
3. Honor Guard members who miss th ree (3) consecutive practices ,
without the permission of the Assi stant to the Sheriff or Honor
Guard Coordinator, may be remov ed as a member of the Sheriff’s
Honor Guard.
4. Honor Guard members who miss tw o (2) events after making a
commitment to attend, may be removed as a member of the
Sheriff’s Honor Guard.
5. It is the duty of current Honor Guard members to train new H onor
Guard members, including bu t not limited to, ceremonial
procedures and practices.
III. Equipment
A. Uniform
1. Honor Guard members are to k eep and maintain their Honor Gua rd
uniform(s) to an exceptional st andard and in goo d working order
(per the updated uniform manual).
2. Requests for uniform components shall be made on the “Honor
Guard Uniform Request Form” and forwarded to the Honor Guard
Coordinator for approval.
IV. Assignment
A. Application/Rotation Process
1. Applicants for the Honor Guar d will apply through the online job
announcement process, and a list will be compiled of qualified
candidates.
2. The list of candidates will las t one (1) year from the time the job
announcement closes to allow for proper evaluation of candidate s.
3. Up to four (4) Honor Guard me mbers will rotate off the team in
order of seniority as new member s are accepted each year.
4. Honor Guard members who have ro tated off may reapply two (2)
years after they have rotated off.

1. Prospective candidates will be evaluated by the Honor Guard
members, the Assistant to the Sheriff and the Honor Guard
Coordinator. Final candidate selection will be made by the
Assistant to the Sheriff with conc urrence from Executive Staff.
2. Evaluation benchmarks may include:
a. Ability to march in step. b. Ability to display crisp and concise movements. c. Ability to comprehend and execute movement calls. d. Dedication to attending regular practice. e. Ability to properly manipulate flags and ceremonial rifles.
f. Availability for events due to current assignment and family
obligations.
g. Ability to assimilate and mai ntain existing Honor Guard team
member values and expectations.
h. Maintain good standing within the Sacramento County
Sheriff’s Office.
