Reinstated/Reemployed Sworn Employees,
Assignment and Seniority
The purpose of the General Order i s to define Department policy regarding assignment
and seniority of retur ning sworn employees
I. Reemployment
A. A reemployed officer is an officer who formerly held perman ent status in a
class, who has been laid off, and who is returning to that cl ass.
B. Reemployed officers shall re tain prior service seniority fo r all purposes
including vacation selection, p romotion eligibility, and wher e considered,
assignment. Reemployed officers will normally be assigned to first
available vacancies in their class; these officers will be gi ven priority
consideration as future vacancie s occur in their former assig nments.
II. Reinstatement A. A reinstated officer is an officer who, at the discretion of the Sheriff, is
reappointed following transfer or resignation in good standin g.
B. A reinstated officer shall only be reinstated to the rank o f Deputy Sheriff.
C. A reinstated officer shall be assigned to entry level care er development
rotation, and shall not be elig ible for reassignment from sec urity and
correctional services ahead of o ther officers present in the service at the
time of his or her reinstatement. D. Reinstated officers shall re tain prior service credit in th eir classification,
less any period of absence, for purposes of promotional eligi bility, vacation
selection (see General Order 15/02.0), and subsequent assignm ents
where seniority is considered. III. Prior to reemployment or re instatement, the Administrative Division shall review
the applicant’s file to ensure that all P.O.S.T. rules and reg ulations are in
compliance. The Administrative Division shall also conduct a full background
investigation conforming to cu rrent P.O.S.T. and Department in vestigative
procedures.
