Page 1 of 3 12/02 (REV 6/13) Student Intern Program (Non Paid) The purpose of the Sa cramento Sheriff’s Department Student Inte rn Program (Non Paid) is to provide a work exper ience program for those persons interested in learning about and working in l aw enforcement. I. The Program The Student Intern Program (Non Paid), which is managed by the Volunteer Services Bureau, is composed of persons working without pay for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Depar tment on a limited time basis. The program consists of special procedures and policies to ensure a compati ble relationship between the intern, submitting in stitution and the Sheriff’s De partment. The program has been estab lished between various educational instit utions of Sacramento County and the Sher iff of Sacramento County. II. Responsibilities of the E ducational Institutions The institution shall provide continuing li aison with the Sheri ff’s Department Volunteer Coordinator This sha ll include ensur ing a Student Int ern Personal History Questionnaire Form (Attach ment 1) is forwarded to the S heriff’s Department Intern Coordinator pri or to the placement interview. III. Responsibilities of t he Student Intern (Non Paid) A. Interns will participate for school credit and shall contact the particular school coordinator for specific requirements. B. The intern shall be expected to carry out assignments in the same manner as regular County employ ees; i.e., maintain proper attendance, dress, punctuality an d attitude. The Intern Coordi nator must be advised of any change of status. C. The intern shall work only in the area assigned by the Inte rn Coordinator. D. The intern shall be issued a Department proximity card or ID card during his or her internship. Upon t he completion of the internship, the intern shall immediately return his o r her ID card to the department. IV. Responsibility of In tern Unit Supervisor Page 2 of 3 12/02 (REV 6/13) A. Each Intern Unit Supervisor s hall provide the Intern Coordin ator with the number of interns that can be e ffectively managed by their unit . Department Divisions who would like to utilize an intern shall forward a Request for a Student Intern form (A ttachment 2) to the Volunte er Coordinator. B. They shall provide an intere sting, varied and educational a ssignment, as well as field trips whenever possible. They shall establish standards for attendance, punctuality, ph ysical appearance, attitude and industriousness. C. The Unit Intern Supervisor shall conduct the interviews with the interns to determine the intern’s adaptabilit y, acceptability and credibil ity for work at the Sheriff’s Department. The Un it’s Intern Supervisor shall u tilize the Student Intern Standard Interview Questions (Attachment 3). Up on choosing the intern, the Unit’s In tern Supervisor shall contact the Volunteer Coordinator to request a background investigation be conducted on the intern prior to u tilizing the intern. D. Prior to utilizing the intern , the intern shall sign the “Us e of Criminal Justice Information” form (7400-105). E. The Unit’s Intern Supervisor s hall not give CLETS access/usa ge to the intern. The Unit’s Intern Supervi sor shall not have the intern drive any vehicle belonging to the Sacram ento County and/or the Sacrament o County Sheriff’s Department, unl ess it is approved by the Divis ion Commander. The intern shall not have direct contact with any i nmate. F. The unit supervisor shall be responsible for the Student Int ern Evaluation (Attachment 4) and any evaluatio n(s) requested by the education al institution. G. If the intern is not an acc eptable fit for the Division (pri or to the end of their internship), the Division shall complete the Student Intern Eva luation and forward the evaluation to the Vo lunteer Coordinator prior to re leasing the intern from the program. H. Upon completion of the intern ship, the Unit’s Intern Supervi sor shall forward a copy of a completed Student Intern Evaluation to the Volunteer Coordinator. The Unit’s Intern Supervisor shall also have the intern complete the SSD Evaluation (Atta chment 5) and forward a copy t o the Volunteer Coordinator. I. If an intern is injured while on duty a Proof of Loss Accide nt Claim Form (SSD Internal website under Worke rs Comp Info & Online Forms fo r the instructions and form) shall be completed by the Division the i ntern is assigned. A copy of the form sh all be forwarded to the Volunte er Coordinator. Page 3 of 3 12/02 (REV 6/13) V. Responsibility of Volun teer Services Bureau A. The Volunteer Coordi nator shall ensure that coordination is maintained with the educationa l institutions. B. The Volunteer Coor dinator shall mainta in the Student Intern Personal History Statement and the Divis ion’s Request for Student Intern form. The Volunteer Coordinator shall fac ilitate matching the intern to t he requesting Division. (Note: Page two of t he Student Intern Personal Hist ory Statement shall be given to the Unit Intern Supervisor prior to them conducting the interview of the intern.) C.
