CORRECTIONAL SERVICES Page 1 of 2 10/10 (REV 11/02) MJ/RCCC HEALTH EQUIPMENT AND CONTROL Purpose This Order defines the procedures u sed to maintain security and control of e quipment used b y medical health personnel. Policy Health personnel shall maintain constant control and accountabi lity of their equipment, instruments an d utensils to ensure the safe ty of staff and inmates and the securit y of the Main Jail. Health Equipment Control Procedures Health equipment and instruments shall only be stored in design ated healthcare rooms such as offices , storage rooms, exam rooms, an d nurse's stations. When possible, healthcare equipm ent and instruments shall be stored in locked cabinets, dra wers, etc. within healthcare room s. When healthcare rooms are unoccupi ed, the doors shall be closed and locked. Healthcare personnel shall conduc t an inventory of equipment an d instruments durin g each shift. Inmates shall not be permitted to handle healthcare equipment o r instruments. Equipment Control Disputes Procedures Healthcare personnel not practicing proper equipment control sh all be verbally advised of the specif ic unacceptable practice by nu rsing supervisors or custody staff and given a recommended alternativ e practice. CORRECTIONAL SERVICES Page 2 of 2 10/10 (REV 11/ 02) MJ/RCCC If a dispute arises, custody staff shall verbally request that a sergeant and a nursing supervisor respond to the location to me diate the situation. If the work practice is critica l to the immediate safety of sta ff or the security of the facility, in t he opinion of the officer, then t he practice shall be sto pped until a ser geant resolves the situation. Larger policy decisions impacti ng more than one shift or reoccu rring situations shall be documented by the appropriate sergeant and forwarded to the Main Jail Comm ander for resolution and final determination. Lost and Found Equipment Procedures Healthcare personnel shall verb ally report the loss of any equi pment immediately to a custody officer.  The officer shall initiate a s earch for the missing equipment.  If unsuccessful, he/she shall verbally report the loss to a sergeant. The sergeant shall assign office rs to seal off the area and con duct a thorough search.  Inmates who had access to the area when the equipment was lost shall be searched. Whether or not the equipment i s found during the search, the sergeant shall assign an officer to write an Incident/Informati on Report.  The officer assigned to the area where the equipment was noticed missin g shall make a ppropriate entries in his/her lo gbook. The healthcare staff reporting t he loss to the custody officer shall complete an Inter-Department C orrespondence form to the sergean t explaining when, what, where and how the equipment was noticed missin g. Medical personnel shall make appr opriate entries in their inven tory lo gs.
