Repair and Movement of Computer Equipment
The purpose of this General Order i s to establish a procedure e ffecting repair and
movement of computer equipment. I. Purpose
Increasing dependence upon computer s for efficient and effectiv e operation of the
Department require that these resources be out of service for t he least possible time in
the event of failure or relocation . Down time for either of the se reasons can be
minimized by timely notificat ion of the approp riate personnel.
II. Scope
A. Computer equipment covered by this Order includes, but is no t limited to:
1. Central processi ng units (CPUs).
2. CRT terminals, printers, and other peripheral devices.
3. PCs and other m icrocomputers.
4. Computer components such as di sk drives, expansion boards,
emulation boards, and adapter cards.
5. Word processors. 6. Cords and cables used by c omputer equipment, whether or not
they are actually connec ted to the equipment.
B. Personally owned computer equipment is not covered by this O rder.
III. Procedure
A. Equipment Repair
1. Equipment belonging to the Sheriff’s Computer Assisted
Telecommunications System (SCAT S) and in need o f repair will be
brought to the attention of the Co mmunications Coordinator,
Technical Services Division , at 440-5277. No repairs requiring tools
will be attempted by Sheriff’s Department personnel without the
approval of the departmental Co mmunications Coordinator.

2. All other improperly functioni ng computer equipment should b e
reported to the Help Desk , Systems and Data Processing
Department, at 440-5555. No repai rs requiring tools will be
attempted by Sheriff’s Departm ent personnel without the approv al
of the departmental EDP Coordinator , Technical Services Divisi on,
at 440-5277. This procedure does not include routine correctiv e
action not requiring tools, such as replacing ribbons, tapes, paper,
and toner, or cl earing paper jams.
B. Relocation of Computer Equipment
1. SCATS computer equipment will not be relocated by Sheriff’s
Department personnel without the approval of the Department
Communications Coordinator, Techni cal Services Division, at 440 -
5277.
2. Relocation of all other com puter equipment will not be attem pted
without the approval of the Departm ent EDP Coordinator, Technic al
Services Division, at 440-5277. In most cases relocations must be
made by skilled technicians. Cir cumvention of this process may not
only result in failure of the moved equipment to operate, but o ther
users in the network may be adversely affected as well.
3. Relocations may also require additional or different equipme nt,
arrangements for communications lines, provision of power outle ts,
or changes in terminal definition tables. All of these things r equire
lead time, sometimes many wee ks; therefore, the departmental
EDP Coordinator should be notified as soon as possible of any
need to have equipment relocated. A ny delay in doing so will al so
delay the time at which the relo cated equipment resumes proper
operation.
4. Removal of old cables of rel ocated equipment will only be do ne by
the appropriate technicians. Any unauthorized severing or other
disconnection of computer equipm ent cables is a violation of th is
Order. If in doubt, consul t the EDP Coordinator.
