OPERATIONS ORDER
Vermin Infestation
The purpose of this Order is to standardize the procedures for the treatment of
prisoners who are vermin infest ed or who have had contact with a vermin infested
prisoner at the Main Jail and at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center (RCCC) , in
accordance with Title 15, Section 1212.
I. Correctional Health
A. Correctional Health Services shall provide for treatment of prisoners who
are vermin infested or have had contact with a vermin infested prisoner.
B. Vermin infestation such as lice or scabies and associated in fections
require immediate medical att ention from medical staff.
II. Treatment Overview
A. Once custody staff discovers a prisoner to be vermin infeste d, or if the
prisoner complains of vermin infe station, medical personnel wil l be called
to confirm the presence of the vermin.
B. The infested prisoner will be separated from the general pop ulation to
minimize exposure to pers onnel and/or other prisoners.
C. The prisoner will be provided a change of clothing, and a bi odegradable
bag in which to place the infested clothing.
1. The infested clothing will be forwarded to laundry services for
cleaning.
2. If the infested clothing is t he prisoner’s personal property , a
notation of the disposition of t he clothing will be made on the
prisoner’s Property and Clothing Record.
D. Medical personnel will provide the infested prisoner and pri soners
exposed to the infestation with the appropriate treatment for t he vermin
infestation. The infected or e xposed area will be cleaned appro priately
before being used again.
