Requests for Det ective Assistance
The purpose of this order is to outline the procedures followed by patrol officers when
requesting assistance from detectives. I. General
All requests for detective assist ance shall be made through the appropriate Field
Services Division Detective Uni t or Centralized Investigative U nit.
A. Patrol officers will contac t a field supervisor and explain the need to
contact a detective. The field supervisor will evaluate the ne ed for a
detective before requesti ng a detective call out.
II. Requests During Normal Duty Hours
Monday through Friday, 0800 to 1700 hours - The patrol supervis or or deputy
shall contact the appropriate inv estigative bureau or detail in accordance with
procedures established by the Fiel d Services divisions’ command ers or
Centralized Investigation Bureau.
III. Requests After Duty Hours
A. Field Services Detectives
1. Requests for Field Services detectives will be made to the d etective
sergeant by the patrol superviso r or deputy and explain the rea sons
for the detective response.
2. Each division shall develop and make available to the deputi es
assigned to that division the s pecific policy and procedure for
detective call-outs for officer’ s assigned to that division. Th is shall
minimally include criteria fo r call-out, telephone numbers wher e the
detective sergeant may be reac hed, and any specific call-out
procedures as determined by the division.
3. The detective sergeant will not ify the on-call detective to respond or
authorize the patrol supervisor to contact them personally for the
call out.

1. Each Centralized Investigati on bureau shall develop, maintai n, and
publish for patrol personnel a policy and procedure for request ing
assistance from the detective bureau. Each bureau shall be
responsible for ensuring that thei r policy and procedure is ava ilable
on the department intra-net, pro vided to the Communications
Center, and made available to pat rol officers in a manner that
facilitates cooperation between Investigations and Patrol.
2. If the need is for a detective from a specific bureau (i.e., Sexual and
Elder Abuse Bureau, Homicide, etc etera) the patrol supervisor o r
deputy will notify the appr opriate bureau supervisor in accorda nce
with that bureau’s publis hed call-out procedure.
3. The on-call detective will be notified to respond in accorda nce with
that bureau’s est ablished procedure.
4. The names and telephone number s of the bureau commander,
detail supervisor or on-call detectives are posted in the
Communications Section.
