6/02.1 (REV 8/99) 1 OPERATION OF SHERIFF ’S DEPARTMENT VEHICLES THE PURPOSE OF THIS GENERAL ORDE R IS TO SET FORTH POLICY GUIDEL INES AND LIMITATIONS PERTAINING TO THE GENERAL OPERATION OF SHERIFF ’S VEHICLES . I. Safe operation a. Employees shall always operate sheriff’s vehicles in a safe man ner consistent with existing conditions. b. There is no such designation as “code-2." c. All command and supervisory officers are charged with monitorin g the driving behavior of their subordinate pe rsonnel, ensuring they adhere t o safe, reasonable driving methods, and they follow the regulations contained with in this order. d. Recommendations for improving safety while operating motor vehi cles should be submitted to the employee’s immediate supervisor, the divisiona l representative on the sheriff’s department safety committee, or directly to th e appointed sheriff’s department safety officer. ii. vehicle security procedures a. To ensure the security and protection of the sophisticated and expensive equipment installed in sheriff’s radio cars, it is necessary th at the unit operator lock the vehicle whenever it is left unattended, except when ha ndling: 1. Instances where ready access to the shotgun, the communications system or other safety equipment is necessary for officer or citizen s afety. 2. Circumstances wherein the vehicle is under the immediate observ ation and relative protection of the officer, such as in vehicle stops.
