Communications Page 1 of 2 6/02.0 (REV 10/98) SHERIFF’S TRAI NING OFFICER The purpose of this order is to o utline the responsibilities of the Sheriff’s Training Officer. I. General The Sheriff’s Training Officer, a Communications dispatcher or Sheriff’s Service Representative (SSR), is under t he direct supervision of the wa tch supervisor with input from the training serg eant and the bureau commander relative to training matters. II. Sheriff’s Training Officer Responsibilities A. Trainee Development: Developin g the potential of each dispat cher or SSR trainee through instruction, couns eling, and practical applicat ion of the basic job skills needed to perform competently in their respect ive job classification. Ideally, at the completion of the training cycl e, the trainee shall need only to refine thes e skills, through experience, to become a competent employee. B. Trainee Evaluations: Complete accurate and prompt evaluation of each assigned trainee. C. Documentation: Documenting each trainee’s progress and notif ying the watch supervisor and the traini ng sergeant of any deficiencies in training or any inability to perform on the part of the trainee. III. Leadership A. The Sheriff’s Training Officer shall provide leadership by d isplaying the following qualities: 1. Integrity – honesty at all times. 2. Loyalty – to our mission. 3. Humility – when in error. 4. Tenacity – at all times. Communications Page 2 of 2 6/02.0 (REV 10/98) 5. Courage – to confront difficult situations. 6. Responsibility – as an indi vidual to the trainee and the bur eau. 7. Confidence – in oneself, in t he trainee, and the training pr ogram. IV. Professional Standards A. The training officer is expec ted to meet and maintain the hi ghest degree of conduct in performance, attendance, appearance, professionalism and evaluations. V. Additional Duties of the Training Officer A. The Sheriff’s training office r participates in administrativ e hearings as required and in any court or civ il service actions which arise from such hearings. B. The training officer, with t he watch supervisor, has specifi c supervisory responsibility for their assigned trainee. C. The training officer is a we ll-trained and experienced emplo yee who is expected to give advice and make recommendations to less experi enced employees regarding Communica tions Bureau operations. D. The training officer will be assigned to the same station as their trainee to monitor the trainee’s work (with the exception of a dispatcher trainee who can be monitored from the S1 cons ole). This will continue until the training officer and training sergeant conc ur that a trainee may be rele ased to independent training. E. The Sheriff’s training offi cer will not be assigned a traine e for more than one training period (four to five weeks) unless circumstances e xist that necessitate an extension. Any ext ension must be approved by the training sergeant.
