Communications Page 1 of 8 6/01.0 (REV 10/98) SHERIFF’S TRAININ G OFFICER SELECTION The purpose of this order is to establish procedures to be foll owed in the selection of Sheriff’s training officers wit hin the Communications Bureau. I. General A. The selection process provi des a means of selection and appo intment of the Communications employees w ho possess the highest qualificat ions for the training and development o f newly employed personnel. B. The training sergeant will fo rmulate a staffing model which represents a minimum number of training office r positions on each of the wat ches. II. Qualification Criteria A. Experience: At least one year o f acceptable service as a Com munications Bureau employee at the time the e ligibility list is established . B. Teaching Potential: Ability to provide instruction as demons trated in contact with peers, supervisors , members of the general public, and prior training experience. C. Initiative: As evidenced in the sincere desire to improve th e professional level of trainees and to obtain se lf-improvement in the process . D. Professional Demeanor/Leadersh ip Abilities: As evidenced by demonstrated ability to willingly conform to department dress a nd grooming standards and demonstrated confidence in their profess ional knowledge and ability to others. E. Communication Skills: Abilit y to effectively and efficiently express a series of events, orally and in writing. F. Personal Qualities: As evidenced by attendance, productivity , interpersonal relationship skill s, and other special considerat ions. III. Application and Selection Process A. When an opening occurs, an announc ement will be posted for a two-week period in the Communications Bureau. Communications Page 2 of 8 6/01.0 (REV 10/98) B. Each bureau employee expressing an interest in the Sheriff’s training officer program will submit a com pleted Sheriff’s training offi cer application form, a copy of the candidate’s most recent performance evaluat ion, and a supervisor’s evaluation package , to their immediate supervisor by the deadline date provided in the announcement. C. The immediate super visor will complete a supervisor’s evalua tion package, review it with the candi date, and submit the entire pa ckage to the training sergeant by the deadl ine date provided in the anno uncement. D. The training sergeant will adm inister a written test assessi ng the candidates’ overall knowledge of the Communications Bureau poli cies and procedures. E. A selection committee will review and discuss all candidate packages and written tests. The committee will then rank the candidates by o verall score. The committee will consist of the administrative sergeant, the training sergeant, a sergeant from each wa tch, and one training officer from each watch. The training sergeant and/ or administrative sergeant may represent this requirement bas ed on current shift assignment. F. The selection committee sha ll prepare a list of qualified ca ndidates to fill anticipated vacancies and forwar d their recommendations to the Communications Bureau commander for final approval. Each list i s valid for six months. G. The training recruit shall a ttend a POST certified, 40-hour training officer course. After successful compl etion of this course, each new tr aining officer shall have a six-mont h probationary pe riod and their pe rformance will be reviewed by the training sergeant and/or watch supervis or. H. Each training officer’s perfo rmance shall be reviewed period ically by the training sergeant subsequent to the finalization of the probati onary period. IV. Reinstatement or Change of S heriff’s Training Officer Job C lassification A. A former training officer who desires reinstatement as a tra ining officer must submit a complete Sheriff’ s training officer application p ackage as outlined above during t he recruitment period. B. Current training officers who change job classification; e.g ., SSR promoted to dispatcher, will maintain thei r training officer status and may resume training after successfully compl eting their own training perio d and probation in their new classifica tion. Training officers who fa ll in this category will be restricted to trai ning personnel within their previous job class only and must submit a mem o to the training sergeant requ esting that their training status be upgraded to their new classificat ion before training within the new classification.
