Detective Division Page 1 of 1 5/02.0 (REV 1/90) EVIDENCE – CHAIN OF POSSESSION The purpose of this order is to d escribe the procedure used for chain of possession of property signed out on temporary release for use as evidence in court. I. General A. The following procedures sha ll be adhered to relative to the chain of possession for property removed from the Property Warehouse for court purposes. 1. The officer taking evidence to court shall sign a receipt fo r the property. 2. The property officer shall give the receiving officer the ye llow copy of the Property Receipt/Repor t along with the evidence. 3. At the time the receiving offi cer confers with the deputy Di strict Attorney, a determination will be made as to the property’s pot ential use as evidence in court. a. If the property will not be needed, the officer shall return the property along with the yello w receipt to the Property Warehouse and indicate the status of the case and whether any property may be released or disposed of. b. If the property is to be in troduced into evidence, the offic er shall require the deputy Distr ict Attorney to sign for the property on the yellow copy o f the Property Receipt/Report. The receipt shall be retur ned to the Property Warehouse. B. Property Returns Property lockers in the Patrol Division and transcription rooms may be used for the return of property and receipts. When returning pr operty, the officer first shall enter the report number and the date on the reverse side of the yellow copy of the report.
