Training Page 1 of 3 4/10.0 (REV 3/91) AMMUNITION ISSUE – SHER IFF’S RANGE FACILITY The purpose of this order is to o utline procedures for the cont rol, purchase, storage, and issuance of ammunition. I. General A. In accordance with departmental policy, it is the responsibi lity of the division of Training and Reserv e Forces to purchase, store, and distribute all ammunition us ed by the department. B. Primary storage of ammuni tion at the Range facility will be in the concrete ammunition bunker with secondar y storage in the ammunition shac k adjacent to Range One. C. Entry to the ammunition bunker and ammunition shack shall be limited to those persons designat ed by the Rangemaster. D. During qualification periods , sufficient ammunition may be s tored in the locked boxes on Range Three to meet the needs of individuals wh o are qualifying. E. Employees who are qualifying will be encouraged to use the d uty ammunition they are carrying. A mmunition used will be replaced on a round-for-round basis. II. Issuance of Ammunition A. Ammunition is to be issued only on an as-needed basis to emp loyees of the department and Count y agencies designated by the Rangemaste r. B. Persons who are qual ifying will be given duty ammunition at Range Three as replacement for that which they have just expended. C. All other ammuniti on will be issued from the ammunition shac k adjacent to Range One. Individual employees will be required to sign a log showing the quantity of each type of ammuni tion they draw. A supervisor shall be required to sign for all ammuniti on drawn for a legitimate unit exercise. The log will be maintained permanently in a hardbound book. Training Page 2 of 3 4/10.0 (REV 3/91) D. Unless specifically authoriz ed by the Rangemaster, all ammun ition issued is to be used at the Sheriff’s R ange facility. This provision e xcludes duty ammunition which is replen ished after qualification. E. A log will be maint ained in the ammuni tion bunker showing th e quantity and kinds of ammunition newly recei ved and that which is remove d for transfer to the ammunition shack or otherwise issued. This log will be used by the Rangemaster as the basis fo r a monthly summary to the di vision commander of Training and Reserve Forces showing ammunition use s and stocks on hand. III. Amount of Ammunition Issued A. Qualification 1. Employees who are shooting for qualificatio n will be issued the amount of ammunition determined necessary by the Rangemaster. In general, only duty ammunition will be used for qualification purposes. B. Practice Shooting 1. Employees are encouraged to par ticipate in practice shooting with their duty weapons in addition to shooting for qualification. 2. A maximum of 100 rounds of amm unition may be used for each practice session on a given day. T his amount is in addition to that which is required for qualificat ion purposes. Reloads and other non- duty types of ammunition may be used at the discretion of the Rangemaster. 3. The Rangemaster may, at thei r discretion, limit the amount o f practice sessions by individual o fficers if deemed excessive. 4. The above provisions are subj ect to ammunition availability and may be changed without notice based on that availability. C. Academy Classes 1. Academy classes will be i ssued the amount and kinds of ammunition as set forth in the approved lesson plan for firearm s instruction. 2. The limitation of 100 rounds of ammunition per practice sess ion may be exceeded for recruits at t he discretion of the Rangemast er. Training Page 3 of 3 4/10.0 (REV 3/91) D. In-Service Training Classes 1. Advanced officer, reserve in- service, and other in-service t raining classes will be issued the am ount and kinds of ammunition as se t forth in the approved lesson plan fo r that particular course of instruction. E. Special Units 1. SED and similar uni ts within the departm ent will be issued t he amount and kinds of ammunition aut horized by the Rangemaster. 2. Special units such as SED wil l advise the Rangemaster of the ir anticipated needs each year in su fficient time for those needs to be incorporated into the budget reques t by the division of Trainin g and Reserve Forces. F. Competition Teams 1. The pistol team, trap team, and similar competition teams wi ll be issued the amount and kinds o f ammunition authorized by the Rangemaster. IV. Care of Ammunition A. Employees who are issued amm unition will be responsible for the safekeeping and proper storage of such ammunition. B. Ammunition should be exami ned upon receipt from the Rangemas ter to determine that it is the proper c aliber and load and that it is in good condition. V. Ammunition Available A. The Rangemaster is responsib le for the maintenance of an ade quate supply of ammunition at all time s and will maintain an on-going inventory to ensure that supplies do not become depleted. B. The
