Reverse Stings
Purpose of the
order The purpose of this order is to establish security procedures f or the handling
of narcotics in a Reverse Stin g operation.
Reverse Sting
Defined Law enforcement authorities are permitted to sell narcotics to suspects and
then arrest them for possessin g it, under certain conditions.
Preparation for a
reverse sting A. A court order shall be obtained to authorize the Sheriff’s Depa rtment to
use the drugs in reverse stings.
B. The drugs used will be taken from cases, which have already bee n
adjudicated.
C. The crime lab has already analyzed these drugs and proved they are
controlled substances.
Case Officer’s
responsibilities While in the case officer’s custody, the narcotics will be reta ined in a locked
operational safe in N.I.D.
Procedure for
returning narcotics After the supply has been deplet ed or is no longer fit for oper ational use,
book the narcotics as evidence or f or destruction as circumstan ces dictate.
