COURT ORDERS
The purpose of this order is to outline the proper method for h andling calls for service
and inquiries regarding court orders. I. General
Violations of court orders are defined as misdemeanors by Secti on 166.4 PC
(criminal contempt) and Section 273.6 PC (willful and knowing v iolation of orders
relating to domestic violence).
II. Enforcement of Existing Orders
A. Communications personnel recei ving a call requesting enforce ment of
Section 273.6 PC court order:
1. If the suspect is present, create a priority three event for dispatch.
2. If the suspect is not presen t, refer complainant to a servic e center
to file a report.
B. Communications personnel rec eiving a call requesting enforce ment of
Section 166.4 PC:
1. If the suspect is present, create a priority three event for dispatch.
2. If the suspect is not presen t, refer complainant to a servic e center
to file a report.
C. Communications personnel are n ot required to verify the vali dity of the
protective order before res ponding to a request for assistance.
III. Emergency Situations
A. Communications personnel rec eiving a call requesting emergen cy
assistance when no order exists and court is not in session sha ll create an
event for dispatch.

IV. Miscellaneous Requests
A. A citizen requesting issuance of a restraining order shall b e informed that
the restraining order is a func tion of the court. The citizen s hould be
advised that they may contact eit her a private attorney for gui dance or
apply for the order themselves by contacting the District Attor ney’s
Victim/Witness A ssistance Program.
B. Requests for service of court orders when the suspect is not present
should be referred to the Civil Division. No one will be referr ed to the Civil
Division for advice in r outine civil problems.
