Incomplete Crime Scene Calls
The purpose of this Order is to i nform Crime Scene Investigatio ns Officers of their
responsibility relating to unfinished crime scenes.
I. Unfinished Crime Scenes
When a crime scene is left unfin ished, the Crime Scene Investig ation Officer
should make every effort to ins ure the scene will be completed at a later time.
A. If the C.S.I. Officer is unabl e to contact the victim, the O fficer should:
1. Complete a Crime Scene Invest igation Reschedule Card and lea ve
it for the victim in a conspi cuous but protected place.
2. Clear the calls wit the word s “unable to contact, left card”
somewhere in the disposition.
3. Log times and disposition on a log sheet. 4. Submit a report at the end-of-w atch sating that the victim w as
unavailable, and a card was left i nstructing the victim to call for a
return visit for a C.S.I. Officer.
B. If the C.S.I. Officer left a scene unfinished due to a prior ity or emergency
call the Officer should:
1. Advise the victim of the need to leave the current scene and of the
return of a Crime Scene Investi gation Officer at a later time t o finish
the scene.
2. Complete a Crime Scene Investi gation Information card (form
7400-176), (if the patrol officer left none), and leave it with the
victim.
3. Ask the dispatcher to reassi gn your unit to the emergency ca ll
insuring the unfinished call re mains in the Pending Queue.
4. Record the times and disposition on a log sheet.

emergency or priority call. If po ssible the same Officer who l eft the
scene unfinished should retur n to complete the scene.
C. Submit a report at the end-of-w atch stating the circumstance s and
outcome of the call.
