Training Page 1 of 3 4/06.0 (REV 3/91) WEAPON ASSIGNMENTS The purpose of this order is to o utline the procedure for the m aintenance and issuance of handguns and other weapons. I. General A. In accordance with General Order 2/09, it is the responsibil ity of the division of Training and Reserv e Forces to store, maintain, iss ue, and account for all weapons which ar e the property of the Sheriff’s Department. B. All weapons which ha ve not been issued to individuals or to other divisions shall be kept in secu re storage in the vault at the R ange. C. A weapon issued to an individua l officer as a personal weapo n shall be signed for personally by the o fficer to whom the weapon is issu ed. A weapon issued to another divis ion and not intended for permanen t issue to a particular officer shall be signed for by the division com mander or such person as the comm ander may designate. D. All equipment provided by the Sheriff’s Department shall rem ain the property of the department. In th e event a department-issued we apon is lost, stolen, damaged or recovered , the officer or other employ ee shall immediately submit an inter- department correspondence to their division commander describing the property and the circumstances of loss or recovery. If a crime report is appropriate, a copy shall be att ached to the inter-department correspondence. C rime reports shall be routed through regular department channels and a copy shall be forwarded to th e commander of the division of Tra ining and Reserve Forces. The e mployee may be required to either reim burse the department or replace t he property which is lost or damaged beyond repair due to careless ness or negligence of the employee. II. Weapons Issuance Procedure A. Weapons must be issued by the Rangemaster or an assistant rangemaster. Training Page 2 of 3 4/06.0 (REV 3/91) B. The individual to whom a w eapon is issued will be required t o go to the Range facility and personally p ick up the weapon. At the time o f assignment, the individual will be required to sign a weapon as signment card which provides a descrip tion of the weapon, the name of th e individual to whom the weapon is i ssued and the date of issuanc e. The signature will be witnessed by t he range staff member who issue s the weapon. The assignment card will be kept in the weapons vault permanently. C. In no event will a weapon be ta ken from the vault for issue or for testing without Range staff first complet ing all required entries on th e assignment card or hand receipt and obtaini ng the required signature. Assi gnment cards will not be taken out of t he vault or sent to another loc ation for the purpose of obtaining signatures. D. Stolen or damaged weapons shall not be replaced until a copy of the inter- department correspondence, written to the employee’s division commander, and/or a crime repor t has been received by the Rangemaster. E. The weapon assignment cards will be routed to the Range faci lity secretary for entry int o the computer system. III. Weapons Return Procedure A. All weapons returned for any r eason must be delivered direct ly to the Range facility by the individ ual to whom the w eapon has been as signed. Weapons shall not be left in the ca re of any other division or unit for delivery to the Range facility unl ess there is no other reasona ble alternative. B. Defective weapons shall be de livered promptly to the Range f acility for repair or replacement. C. Employees who are retiring wil l personally return their assi gned weapon to the Range facility. Personnel who are sworn in as reserve deput ies following retirement for the pur pose of working as retired annu itants may be allowed to retai n their duty weapon. D. In the case of an employee’s death, total incapacitation, or other circumstances where it is imprac tical for the employee to retur n a weapon, the employee’s commanding officer shall be responsible for safe guarding the weapon and returning it to the Range facility. E. Personnel who are issued a weapon in add ition to their norma l duty weapon because of their current w ork assignment must return the additional weapon to the Range fa cility at the conclusion of th e assignment. When an assigned weapon is ret urned to the Range facility, t he weapon assignment card will be immediatel y removed from file and the n otation “returned” will be written on t he face of the card with the dat e and the initials of the Rangemaster or a ssistant rangemaster accepting the weapon. The returned weapon will be placed in a designated area within the vault and will not be reissued to any employee until it has been safety checked by a qualified arms ex pert and any necessary adjustment s or repairs are performed. G. Special weapons returned to the Range facility at the conclu sion of an employee’s particular assignm ent will be tagged so that the ret urned weapon will be reissued only to th e employee’s replacement in t he same division.
