Off-Duty Badge Policy
The purpose of this General Order i s to provide policy guidelin es regarding off-duty
badge authorization for Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department employees and
Reserves. The objective is to p rovide procedures for SSD emplo yees relative to
authorized procurement of off-dut y identification badges. The Administrative Division,
Purchasing/Facilities Management Unit, shall be the sole source for off-duty badges.
Any other method of procuring th is type of identification is no t authorized by this
Department. I. Off-Duty Badges (Sworn Personnel)
A. Status Requirements 1. Sworn personnel are authoriz ed to purchase off-duty badges
t h r ough the above source only after they have satisfactorily
c o m p l e t e d t h e i r one-year probationary period.
B. Badge Styles Authorized
1. The badge is identified as gol d with either t he State of Ca lifornia
seal or the State capitol dom e in the badge center. The styl e is left
optional at the di scretion of the officer. If the badge desi gnated as
having the State of Californi a seal is requested, the officer ’s name
will be placed in the appropriate name panel space provided i n the
lower portion of the badge. T he wording surrounding the seal is
described as hard-fired black enamel reading “Deputy Sheriff
Sacramento County.” 2. For a ranked officer, an applicable ribbon is affixed cross the top
two badge points descriptive of existing rank status. C. Procurement Procedure 1. Officers shall contact the Purchasing/Faci lities Management Unit
and, after presenting appropria te identification, submit eith er a
check or money order payable to the appropriate vendor (payme nt
in full to be made prior to the order being placed).

2. When the badge is received by the Purchasing/Facilities
Management Unit, the employee will be contacted and advised t o
make arrangements for pick-up.
II. Off-Duty Badges (Reserve Personnel)
A. Status Requirements
1. A Reserve deputy sheriff ma y request an off-duty badge provi ded
they have satisfactorily compl eted a one-year t enure period as an
active Reserve with this Department.
B. Badge Style Authorized
1. The badge is identified as gol d with the State of Californi a seal in
the badge center with a ribbon affi xed across the top two bad ge
points reading “Reserve.” T he Officer’s name will be placed in the
appropriate name panel space prov ided in the lower portion of the
badge. The wording surrounding the seal is described as hard-fired black enamel reading “Deputy Sheriff Sacramento
County.” Rank status within t he Reserve Program will not be
separately identified. C. Procurement Procedure
1. The Reserve officer must c ontact the Purchasing/Facilities
Management Unit and, after presenting the appropriate identification, submit a check or money order payable to the

Management Unit, the Reserve offi cer will be contacted and

III. Off-Duty Badges (Non-Sworn Personnel)
A. Status Requirements
1. Badge carrying non-sworn pers onnel are authorized to purchas e
off-duty badges only after they have satisfactorily completed their
six-month probat ionary period.

B. Badge Style Authorized
1. The badge is identified as gold with the State of California seal.
The employee’s name will be plac ed in the appropriate name pan el
space provided. The working su rrounding the seal is described as
hard-fired black enamel reading “Sheriff’s Dept. Sacramento
County.”
C. Procurement Procedure
1. Authorized employees shall contact the Purchasing/Facilitie s
Management Unit and, after present ing appropriate identificat ion,
submit either a check or money o rder payable to the appropria te
vendor (payment in full to be ma de prior to the order being p laced).
