Training Page 1 of 2 4/04.0 (REV 3/91) CONCEALED WEAPONS PERMI T APPLICANT TRAINING The purpose of this order is to outline the procedures to be fo llowed for classroom and Range training for concealed weapon permit applicants. I. General Instruction shall be provided by Range staff for all approved c oncealed weapon permit applicants under the jurisd iction and control of the She riff’s Department. II. Weapon A. Applicants shall be trained to safely handle and qualify wit h each of the approved weapons listed on the pe rmit application (maximum of t hree weapons). B. All weapons shall be safety i nspected by the Rangemaster or their designee. C. Applicants shall not be pe rmitted to fire any weapon on the Range that is considered unsafe in the opinion of the Range staff. III. Ammunition A. Applicants shall provide 100 rounds of ammunition for each w eapon listed on the permit (maximum of three weapons; 300 rounds). B. Only factory-loaded ammuniti on of standard commercial grade shall be acceptable for use on the Range. IV. Training Schedule A. Concealed weapon permit tr aining shall be scheduled by the Rangemaster. B. Applicants will be scheduled by date for a starting time dur ing the permit process by Special Investigations. C. No more than 12 participants shall be scheduled for each one hour session. Training Page 2 of 2 4/04.0 (REV 3/91) D. Participants shall be requi red to report to the Rangemaster at least half an hour prior to the scheduled sessi on for a weapons safety check. E. The Rangemaster will be prov ided with a list of scheduled ap plicants by Special Investigations at leas t one month prior to the session. V. Course of Instruction – Fir earms Familiarization Program A. Instruction shall be provided relative to the legal aspects of the use of concealable firearms by non-law enforcement civilian personnel. B. Instruction shall be given fo r specific range safety procedu res and general home safety procedures. C. The course of fire shall in clude 100 rounds of ammunition fi red from the seven yard line. The course of fi re will emphasize loading, fir ing single and double action, and unloading at the applicant’s own pace with n o time limit. VI. Reporting A. The Rangemaster shall repor t those persons who successfully complete the training course to Special In vestigations. Only those appli cants who have successfully completed the Firearms Familiarization Progra m shall be issued a permit to ca rry a concealed weapon. B. The Rangemaster also shall not ify Special Investigations of those applicants who fail to attend the training as scheduled, or who fail to successfully complete t he training program. C. A complete lesson plan cover ing the course of instruction an d a complete record of applicants and their sco re will be maintained by the Rangemaster.
