CIVIL DIVISION – SHERIFF’ S KEEPERS - SELECTION
I. Purpose
The purpose of this Operations Or der is to establish a procedu re for the selection
of Sheriff’s Keepers.
II. Definition of a Keeper
A keeper is a non-sworn independen t contractor, who is install ed, by a deputy
sheriff, in a business under levy , to monitor business activit ies. A levy is a
method used to help satisfy a court judgment. Keepers are expe cted to follow the
directions of the deputy who inst alls them, monitor collection of money, make
sure no property leaves the bus iness without being paid or acc ounted for, and
conduct or assist with inventorying of property under levy. Th ey are not expected
to take enforcement action, but are expected to report unusual activity to the
installing deputy.
III. Selection Process
The following procedure will be used to select Sheriff’s Keepe rs.
If the candidate is already a S heriff’s Department employee or volunteer
you should request an Inter-Departm ental Correspondence indicat ing
desire to become a Sheriff’s Keeper
If the candidate is not current ly associated with the Sheriff’ s Department
they must complete an Abridged Personnel History Statement for Non-
Sworn Personnel package
The Civil Division field supervi sor will complete a background investigation
on all candidates. Any candidate w ho has any history of untrust worthiness
or emotional instability will not be accepted
Candidates who pass the backgro und investigation will be invit ed to a
training/information session pres ented by Civil Division person nel. Civil
Division personnel may also use this session for additional scr eening of
candidates.
A list of successful candidates w ill be maintained by Civil Di vision
personnel to be used as needed.
