FIRE AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE CALLS
The purpose of this order is to outline the proper method for h andling calls where fire
and/or medical assistance is needed. I. 911 Calls
A. When receiving a call for a ssistance where the problem appea rs to be
strictly medical or fire relat ed, the caller shall be immediate ly transferred to
fire dispatch using the ANI one- button speed transfer. The call er will be
advised to stay on the line while they are being connected with
fire/medical dispatch.
1. If the caller is reporting a sick or injured person, the cal ler will be
transferred to fire dispatch imme diately without creating an ev ent.
After fire units arrive on scene , they will determine if SSD ne eds to
respond.
B. When receiving a call for assi stance for an injury resulting from a criminal
incident, all necessary info rmation will be obtained from the c aller to
create an event for dispatch.
1. If the caller is the injured party or with the injured party , the caller
will be transferred to fire dispat ch using the ANI one-button s peed
transfer. Upon initial transfer , fire dispatch will be advised that SSD
will be responding when there is an available unit. Fire dispat ch will
be given an event number at this time. The call-taker will note in the
event comments that fire dispat ch has been advised. Dispatchers
will advise field unit s upon initial dispatch of the call to al ert them
that fire will be responding.
2. If the caller is not the inju red party or with the injured p arty, the
caller will not be transferred to fire dispatch and Communicati ons
will not contact fire dispatch to r espond until field units arr ive on
scene to determine the need.
C. Calls for service where the caller has attempted suicide or with a subject
that has attempted suicide, imm ediately transfer the caller to fire dispatch
without creating an event unless there are weapons or violent s ubject
involved.

1. If the fire department det ermines the need for SSD response, fire
dispatch will contact SSD dispat ch via the ring-down line and a
priority two 902A event will be created.
2. For a call received for a suic ide threat only where there is no
confirmation of any attempt, fi re dispatch will not be contacte d until
SSD has arrived and determined the need for their response.
II. Non 911 Calls
A. The same procedures for handlin g 911 calls will be used for calls not
received on 911. Because no ALI i nformation is obtained on thes e calls,
the call-taker will advise fire d ispatch of the address and pho ne number of
the caller upon initial transfer.
