Criteria and Procedure for the Response of a Crime Scene Invest igation Officer
The purpose of this Order is to e stablish the criteria and proc edure for the response of a
Crime Scene Investigation Officer. I. Criteria for Response
A Crime Scene Investigation Offi cer may be dispatched for any f ollow up
investigation for cases where the requesting Officer lacks the necessary
equipment or expertise to adequately process a scene and/or ite ms of evidence.
Crime Scene Investigation Officers will not respond to the foll owing types of
crimes: A. Vehicle Burglaries, with the ex ception of a series previousl y approved by
the Bureau supervisor
B. Vandalism C. Misdemeanor crimes with the e xception of hate/bias crimes
II. Types of Crime Scene Investigation Calls
All requests for follow-up by a Cri me Scene Investigation Offic er must include the
Crime Report number, type of follo w-up to be provided, victim’s name and
address, victim’s contact phone num ber (if available) and the p atrol event
number if the request is to be s ubmitted as a separate event.
A. A priority one request for follo w-up by a Crime Scene Invest igation Officer
shall be labeled as a CSI1, and must be approved by a superviso r prior to
placing the request with the comm unications center. A CSI1 req uest can
include:
1. All homicides 2. Dead bodies involving su spicious circumstances
3. All calls where there is a potential for destruction of evid ence
B. A priority two request for fo llow-up by a Crime Scene Invest igation Officer
shall be labeled as a CSI2, and must be approved by a superviso r prior to
placing the request with the comm unications center. A CSI2 req uest can
include:

2. All violent assaults (i.e. s exual or shooting assaults)
3. All calls where a patrol deputy must stand by to preserve a scene
C. A routine request for burglary follow-up by a Crime Scene In vestigation
Officer shall be labeled a CSI3B
D. All other routine requests fo r follow-up for a Crime Scene I nvestigation
Officer shall be labeled a CSI3
