Training Page 1 of 3 4/01.0 (REV 3/91) RANGEMASTER The purpose of this order is to describe the duties and respons ibilities of the Rangemaster. I. General Under the direction of the execut ive lieutenant of the Division of Training and Reserve Forces, the Rangemaster (a sergeant) is responsible for all Range activities. II. Administration A. Supervise and evaluate all Rang e staff including part-time e mployees. B. Designate work sc hedules and assignments. C. Plan, supervise, and conduct a cademy and in-service training . D. Ensure safety rules are formu lated, properly posted, and fol lowed at the Range. E. Provide counseling as appropr iate for Range staff members. III. Budgetary Responsibilities A. Work with the division budget c oordinator in preparing annua l budget projections in the following areas; 1. Supply and ammunition costs. 2. Cost of improvements and/or new construction. 3. Equipment replacement costs. B. Maintain up-to-date records of expenditures by the Range. C. Approve all purchase requests prior to submission to the div ision budget coordinator. D. Assess and approve the need for work requests prior to submi ssion. Training Page 2 of 3 4/01.0 (REV 3/91) IV. Range Operations A. Supervise all activities of the following groups when engage d in activities at the Range: 1. All department personnel incl uding intensive and extended fo rmat academy recruits. 2. Outside agencies. 3. Inmate workers. B. Responsible for scheduling and coordination of Range use act ivities. C. Ensure compliance with all app licable orders, safety regulat ions, and security procedures by Range st aff and other department personn el, and inmate workers. V. Training A. Plan and implement academy and in-service instruction in the following areas: 1. Basic firearms use. 2. Firearms maintenance. 3. Specialized firearms instruc tion, automatic weapons, etc. 4. Chemical agents. 5. Any other specialized instru ction mandated by the department . B. Provide remedial training to in-service personnel and academ y students when required. C. Ensure Range staff is properly trained in firearms instructi on techniques and maintenance. D. Keep abreast of new technology and methodology in firearms t raining and implement changes and new tec hniques as required. VI. Firearms Qualification A. Formulate and publish trim ester schedules for mandatory qual ification by department personnel. B. Maintain complete and accura te records of mandatory qualific ation. C. Schedule night schools as required. Training Page 3 of 3 4/01.0 (REV 3/91) VII. Range Maintenance/Improvements A. Project, plan, and supervi se routine Range maintenance. B. Plan improvements well in advance for annual budget requests . C. Act as liaison with other C ounty agencies prior to, and duri ng, building projects. D. Act as a liaison with RCCC in m atters concerning the use of inmate workers. VIII. Weapons Inventory Control/Issuance A. Responsible for the proper cont rol of department-owned weapo ns. 1. Issue weapons consistent wit h procedures established by department policy. B. Conduct inventories of weapons cons istent with established d epartment policy. 1. Maintain liaison with Admini strative Division and ensure new weapons and destroyed weapons are property accounted for and recorded.
