KEYS AND CONTROL
Purpose This Order will define the Mai n Jail policy on handling, mainta ining and
controlling facility keys. The pur pose of this Order is to prov ide for the
safet y and securit y of the facilit y, staff and inmates.

Procedure Upon being assigned to the Main Jail, each employee will go thr ough the
Projects Officer for the issuance of ke ys.
Step A c t i o n
1. The new employee will fill out the Employee Equipment Form.
Each key assigned along wit h the corresponding key number
will be listed.
2. All equipment, including keys are the responsibility of each
employee.
3. If an assigned key is broken, it must be returned to the Proje cts
Office before a re placement ke y will be issued.
4. No additional keys will be issued, unless authorized by the
Division Commander.
5. When the employee transfers to a nother division , or leaves the
Main Jail employment, the issued keys will be turned into the
Projects Office.
The employee’s personnel file will be retained by the Main
Jail, until all equipment (incl uding keys) is returned to the
Projects Office.

Missing Keys Any deputy discoverin g missin g keys shall take the followin g steps.
Step A c t i o n
1. Conduct an a ppropriate search
2. Make a verbal re port to a Ser geant
3. Complete a written report
One copy to Facility Commander through chain of command
One co py to the Jail Administrative Ser geant
Broken Keys Deputies discovering broken or damaged keys and key rings will take the
followin g steps.
Immediately report to a Sergeant
Deliver broken or damaged key set t o the Projects Office for re pair or
replacement.
Key Handling
Procedures The following procedures shall be adhered to.
Never use keys in a manner inc onsistent with their intended use .
Take precautions when using and discussing keys in the presence of
inmates.
All keys will be properly secu red on the person and will never be left
unattended.
Duplication of any facility key or lock is prohibited .
Floor key sets shall NOT be removed from the facility except for repair
or under exi gent circumstances.
