First Aid Kits / Trauma Bags
The purpose of this Order is to fa miliarize custody staff with the procedures of
inspecting and replenishing the First Aid Kits/Trauma Bags (RCC C only) located
throughout the Main Jail and the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center (RCCC).
I. Policy
First Aid Kits/Trauma Bags are fo r the use of custody and medic al staff to perform minor
medical care as needed to the st aff, inmates, and visitors. Th e First Aid Kits/Trauma
Bags will be placed in pre- approved locations throughout the fa cility. Correctional
Health Services (CHS) staff will approve the c ontents of the Fi rst Aid Kits/Trauma Bags.
II. Locations of First Aid Kits at the Main Jail
A. First Aid Kits shall be loca ted in the following locations:
1. Public Counter 2. Kitchen 3. Laundry 4. Court Control 5. All housing unit control rooms (floors 3-8)
a. Two (2) replacement kits will be kept in the second floor
infirmary.
6. Sobriety Testing Station
a. This kit is to be used in the booking/intake, Central Contro l,
and Garage areas.
7. Second floor (location is 2-East)
a. This kit is to be used in the two (2) East Housing Unit Cont rol
Room, the medical desk (2 medical), and the acute
psychiatric unit (2P).

IV. First Aid Kit Maintenance
A. Each First Aid Kit will have a content check list.
1. Custody staff assigned to a work station that is responsible for a
first aid kit shall inspect the ki t at the start of each shift to verify its
contents.
2. A log book entry shall be made at the beginning of each shif t
indicating that the kit is properly stocked.
3. Items that are depleted from the kit shall be recorded on t he
content check list. This form sha ll then be forwarded to the Sa fety

MJ/RCCC officer who will insure the forms are distributed to medical st aff so
the items can be replaced.
V. Locations of Trauma Bags at RCCC
1. Housing unit control rooms (4 ): J & K Barracks, CBF, SBF, and
RBF.
2. Sandra Larson Facility (SLF) 3.
Infirmary (MHU)
4. Booking
5. Gatehouse
6. Administration
7. MHU Supervising Nurse Office (Spare).
VI. Trauma Bag Maintenance
A. Each Trauma Bag will be sealed as follows: 1. Unnumbered or numbered seal o n each compartment. (Seal
numbers are not tracked)
B.
Custody staff assigned to a work st ation with a Tr auma Bag shal l inspect
the bag at the start of each shi ft to verify all seals are inta ct.
1. A log book entry should be made at the beginning of each shi ft
indicating “Trauma Bag in spected seals intact”.
C. The following procedures shall be followed if any of the seals are not intact
at the beginning of the shift ins pection, or the bag was used f or a medical
emergency during the shift:
1. Complete a log book entry indica ting “Trauma Bag inspected,
unserviceable” (or “unsealed”).
2. Contact Correctional Health S ervices (CHS) nursing supervis or on
duty to replace or restock and seal the bag.
D. The following procedures outline the steps to be taken to ensur e the
equipment within the Traum a Bag is maintained:
1. CHS staff is responsible for quarte rly inspection of all bags’ seals
and re-equipping the bags whenever needed.
2. CHS staff is responsible for doc umentation, tim ing of hemi-a nnual
complete open-bag inspections.

MJ/RCCC 3. CHS staff will replace all it ems used or missing as necessar y.

A binder with bag seal inspection and resultant actions, includ ing
the bag’s ID number and location , will be maintained in the MHU by
CHS-assigned personnel.
