SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEE RELATIONS OFFICER
THE DEPARTMENT ACKNOWLEDGES THE NEED FOR AN EMPLOYEE RELATIONS OFFICER TO HELP EMPLOYEES
UNDERSTAND AND RESOLVE ISSUES IMPORTANT TO THEIR WELFARE . THE PURPOSE OF THIS GENERAL ORDER IS TO
SPECIFY THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBI LITIES OF THE EMPLOYEE RELATIO NS OFFICER POSITION .
I. GENERAL
THE EMPLOYEE RELATIONS OFFICER WI LL BE A LIEUTENANT ASSIGNED TO THE ADMINISTRATIVE
DIVISION.
II. DUTIES OF EMPLOYEE RELATIONS OFFICER
A. IF A DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR DIES , THE EMPLOYEE RELATIONS
OFFICER SHALL BE AVAILABLE TO A SSURE THAT THE EMPLOYEE AND THEI R FAMILY RECEIVE ALL
BENEFITS DUE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE ሺREF. GENERAL ORDER 7/04, REVISION 10/96 AND
GENERAL ORDER 11/09, REVISION 1/89ሻ.
B. THE EMPLOYEE RELATIONS OFFICER S HALL ASSURE THAT EMPLOYEES HAVE A B A S I C
UNDERSTANDING OF LAWS AND REGULATIONS THAT EXPLAIN THEIR BENEFI TS. THE OFFICER
WILL ALSO DISTRIBUTE ANY CHANGES IN LAWS OR REGULATIONS TO THE EMPLOYEES INVOLVED .
C. THE EMPLOYEE RELATIONS OFFICER SHALL BE AVAILABLE TO ASSIST MAN AGERS WITH ISSUES
REGARDING SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN WORKING CONDITIONS OR CHANGES TO BARGAINING
AGREEMENTS .
D. THE EMPLOYEE RELATIONS OFFICER S HALL HAVE UNOBSTRUCTED ACCESS T O THE SHERIFF AND
TOP LEVEL MANAGERS . THE EMPLOYEE RELATIONS OFFICER WILL ATTEND MEETINGS WITH
SHERIFF'S EXECUTIVE STAFF , DIVISION BRIEFINGS , COUNTY LEVEL PERSONNEL MEETINGS , RISK
MANAGEMENT MEETINGS AND OTHERS A S NECESSARY TO THE EMPLOYEE REL ATIONS OFFICER
FUNCTION.
E. THE EMPLOYEE RELATIONS OFFICER S HALL ASSIST DIVISION COMMANDERS IN HANDLING
FORMAL GRIEVANCES AND WILL COORDINATE AND TRACK ALL FORMAL EMPL OYEE GRIEVANCES
AS OUTLINED IN GENERAL ORDER 3/04 ሺREV 4/95ሻ.

F. THE EMPLOYEE RELATIONS OFFICER W ILL DESIGN AND MANAGE THE DEPAR TMENT'S MODIFIED
DUTY PROGRAM . THE INTENT OF THIS PROGRAM WI LL BE TO REHABILITATE ILL AND IN JURED
WORKERS AFTER A JOB RELATED ILLNESS OR INJURY . THE EMPLOYEE RELATIONS OFFICER WILL
ALSO COORDINATE FITNESS FOR DUTY EXAMINATIONS AND TRAUMATIC INC IDENT FOLLOW ‐UP
WITH DIVISION COMMANDERS .
G. THE EMPLOYEE RELATIONS OFFICER SHALL RECEIVE AND EVALUATE THE M INUTES OF MEET ‐AND‐
CONFER SESSIONS AND WILL BRIEF UPPER MANAGEMENT , AS APPROPRIATE .
