Training Page 1 of 4 3/05.1 (REV 3/91) RESERVE OFFICER FIEL D TRAINING PROGRAM The purpose of this order is to e stablish the field training re quirements for all Level I Reserve Deputy Sheriffs upon acc eptance into the Reserve progra m. I. General Policy A. Upon graduation from the basic recruit academy or the Level I Reserve Academy, each reserve officer sha ll satisfactorily complete a t en-month field training program consisting of three modules. 1. Patrol Training – F our months (16 shifts) 2. Security Training – Two months (15 shifts) 3. Other Training – Two months (8 shifts) B. While in such training, offi cers shall be on probation and s hall remain on probation until all elements of the trai ning program have been satisfactorily completed. Failure to complete one or more of the training modu les on a satisfactory basis shall be gr ounds for termination from the re serve program. C. “Other” training w ill be established by the reserve training bureau and may include shift assignment s at the Airport, Records, Communicatio ns, Courthouse, or the training academy. II. General Procedures A. Frequency of Training Shifts 1. All reserve trainees are requir ed to work a minimum of once every week (a week is designated as Sunday through Saturday) during their training period. Failure to do so will result in the trai ning period being extended beyond the designated time. B. Duration of Training Period 1. All reserve trainees are requir ed to satisfactorily complete their field training within one year after ac ceptance into the reserve prog ram. Training Page 2 of 4 3/05.1 (REV 3/91) C. Scheduling for Other Training Shifts 1. The reserve trainee must cont act the scheduling sergeant mid - month with the day and shift the trainee plans to work for the following month. Failure to schedule wit h the sergeant within the designated time frame (from the 15th to the 22nd of each month) will result in the trainee not being sc heduled for that particular m onth. In the situation where the trai nee fails to submit a schedule on t ime, the trainee shall submit a writt en explanation to the sergeant explaining the failure to submi t a timely schedule. The reserve trainee is responsible for maki ng contact with the scheduling sergeant on a regular basis. The trainee shall not work unless scheduled by the scheduling sergeant. D. Scheduling for Patrol and Security Training Shifts 1. These training shifts are pr edetermined by each division tra ining coordinator. Each trainee shall be assigned to work with a spec ific reserve training officer (RTO or JTO) and no deviations or rescheduling of this training s hall occur without the permissio n of the respective division trai ning coordinator. If extreme circumstances require a change in a n assigned training schedule , the reserve trainee must make direct contact with each of the following individuals: a. The Patrol/Security training coordinator; b. The reserve training lieutenant; and c. The reserve scheduling sergeant. 2. The Patrol/Security training coordinator shall have the disc retion of extending any reserve trainee’s tr aining period and will make t he ultimate decision whether the tr ainee has successfully complete d the assigned training module. The reserve trainee shall not wor k in Patrol/Security unless scheduled. E. Failure to Meet Assigned “Other” Training Shifts 1. If the trainee is ill or an extreme em ergency prevents the o fficer from attending an assigned shift, t he officer must notify the scheduling sergeant prior to missi ng the shift. The trainee mus t make arrangements to immediat ely reschedule any lost time. Failure to reschedule lost time will result in extension of the reserve trainee’s training period. Training Page 3 of 4 3/05.1 (REV 3/91) F. Failure to Meet Assigned Patrol Training Shifts 1. If a reserve trainee is ill or an extreme emergency prevents the officer from attending an assigne d patrol training shift, the o fficer must notify: a. The patrol division; north or south, as appropriate; b. The patrol training coordinator; and c. The scheduling sergeant. 2. The reserve trainee’s time i n patrol will be extended in ord er to make up missed patrol training sh ifts. The reserve trainee shal l not make up lost time without prior approval of the security traini ng coordinator. G. Failure to Meet Assigned Se curity Training Shifts 1. If a reserve trainee is ill or an extreme emergency prevents the officer from attending an assigne d security training shift, the trainee must notify: a. The Main Jail or RCCC, as appropriate; b. The security training coordinator; and c. The scheduling sergeant. 2. The trainee’s time in security will be extended in order to make up missed security training shifts. The trainee shall not make up lost time without prior approval of t he security training coordinato r. H. Working Spec ial Assignments 1. If a reserve trainee is contact ed to work a special assignme nt by someone other than the officer’ s assigned scheduling sergeant, or if the trainee
