TIME COMMITMENT BY RESERVE DEPUTIES WORKING AS PAID
TEMPORARY EMPLOYEES
The purpose of this order is to o utline the requirements for pa id temporary employees
(on-call deputy sherif fs) relating to volunteer activities and support activities in
association with the Reserve Forces. I. General
A. On-call deputy sheriffs are paid temporary employees and are identified
by one of the following assignments:
1. Long-Term Assignment
a. This term describes an employee whose assignment is
reflected on a personnel or der to a work schedule not to
exceed 60 hours in a regular two-week pay period.
2. Short-Term Assignment
a. This term describes an empl oyee who is contacted by a
facility supervisor to work in a part-time c apacity for the
purpose of filling immediate and temporary staffing needs at
various department locations. Assignments in this capacity are expected to be on a day-to-day basis.
B. Both long and shor t-term on-calls are te mporary County emplo yees who
have been certified by the Departm ent of Education and Training as
having met the requirements for te mporary employment in the cla ss of
deputy sheriff on-call.
II. Special Provisions
A. On-calls who have been assigne d to a long-term assignment sh all not be
required to perform any Reserve Forces volunteer assignments ex cept
during emergencies decl ared by the Sheriff.
B. On-Calls assigned to a long-te rm assignment schedule are not eligible for
employment within another facilit y or division during the same pay period.

C. On-Calls at or near the 60-hour maximum shall not accept rou tine
assignments which will cause t hem to exceed these limitations.
D. Except for emergencies, on-ca lls are not eligible for more t han one shift
assignment within a given day. T his restriction applies regardl ess of
assignment locations or hours worked that pay period.
E. The criterion for overtime c ompensation payment is not affec ted by this
order. On-calls are eligible for overtime payment for time work ed in excess
of a modified work schedule (eig ht hours per day or 40 hours in one
week).
F. On-calls who are working in a short-term capacity and have w orked 56-60
hours per pay period for four con secutive pay periods shall be exempted
from any Reserve Forces volunt eer commitment during the followi ng pay
period. Such exemption shall be continued unt il the 56-60 hour pay
periods of service are interrupted.
III. Minimum Qualifications
A. All on-calls must maintain mi nimum qualifications mandated b y law and
the Commission on Peace Officers ’ Standards and Training (POST) .
Consistent with the department’s needs, such training may occur while the
employee is working on County time at the discretion of the emp loyee’s
supervisor. On-calls serving in a probationary training period shall not be
exempted from the Reserve Forces volunteer requirement to satis fy entry
level training standards.
IV. Reserve General Meetings
A. On-calls are not exempted fr om attending the Reserve Forces semi-
annual general membersh ip meetings, nor shall employees in this
classification be compensated fo r their attendance at such meet ings.
Employees who are working in th is capacity during the hours of the
general meeting may be excused from attendance. All other reque sts for
absences must be submitted, in wr iting, and approved by the Res erve
Forces coordinator.
V. Volunteer Service
A. On-Calls may not perform in any volunteer capacity as a depu ty sheriff
beyond the normal duties of thei r on-call assignments without t he express
permission of the reserve coordinator.

B. On-calls who qualify for exemption from v oluntary service ma y, at their
option, elect to continue servi ng as volunteers in the Reserve Forces by
notifying the reserve coordinat or, in writing, of their decisio n. The decision
to continue the volunteer commi tment may be rescinded at any ti me by
the on-call.
VI. Policy/Procedures Violation
A. On-Calls found to be in violation of the provisions of this order may be
subject to termination from the Reserve Forces.
