C.S.I. End-Of-Shift Major Crime Scene Response
The purpose of this Order is to e stablish a policy for consiste nt Crime Scene
Investigation response to major crime scenes occurring within t he last two hours of the
shift. I. General
In an effort to reduce the over time usage and the occurrence of extended work
hours, it will be the pol icy of the Crime Sc ene Investigation U nit to assign the
primary responsibility for majo r crime scene response to the C. S.I. Supervisor or
lead C.S.I. Deputy. In such an in stance, one on-duty Crime Sce ne Investigation
Officer will respond to the scene. The remaining Officers will be permitted to go
end-of-watch at the regular time ( usually thirty [30] minutes p rior to end-or-
watch).
II. The initial responding Officer will do the following:
A. Evaluate the crime scene to determine whether a delay in C.S .I. response
will be critical to the preserva tion and collection of evidence .
B. If a delay is critical, not ify the C.S.I. Supervisor of the need for additional
units or retaining of current on-duty Officers on overtime.
C. Consult with on-scene Officer(s ), supervisors or detectives in charge to
insure that adequate steps are tak en to secure the crime scene and
protect and preserve possi ble items of evidence.
D. Begin preliminary duties as necessary, such as photography o r
videography of outer perimeters.
E. Any reports required of the initial responding Officer will pend until their
next scheduled shift, except in ca ses where an extended delay w ill
hamper the investigation. Repor t preparation wil l be coordinat ed with the
Officer or detective in charge.
