Duties and Responsibilities of Crime Scene Investigators
The purpose of this order is to define and describe the duties and responsibilities of the
Deputy Sheriff’s assigned to t he Identificat ion Bureau.
I. Definition
Deputy Sheriff’s assigned to the Identification Bureau are refe rred to as Crime
Scene Investigation Officers, or C.S.I. Officers are normally a ssigned to work as
a single unit, providing a servic e on a twenty-four hour basis, seven days a week.
(A C.S.I. Officer may be asked to function as a two-person unit with another if
there is a shortage of vehicles , or a ride-along, or a trainee has been assigned.)
They will evaluate and proce ss crime scenes by doing any of the following:
A. Process the scene for latent fingerprint evidence.
B. Locate, collect and preserve items of physical evidence. C. Record the scene through phot ography, videography, diagram a nd/or
written report.
D. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Identificat ion Bureau
Supervisors
II. Responsibilities
A. Beginning of shift
1. Begin on time, in uniform, and ready to respond to assigned calls
for service.
2. Log onto the CAD system within 15 minutes
3. Check on pending calls and the status of C.S.I. Officers alr eady on
duty.
4. Check Email, voicemail and mailbox messages. 5. Check field equipment to insur e it is in working order.
6. Check to make sure personal work supplies are adequate.

B. During the shift
1. Monitor pending C.S.I. calls and other C.S.I. Officers
2. Remain available for C.S.I. c alls unless involved in an inci dent due
to officer or public safety, or directed by a superior office i n
compliance with General Orders.
3. Handle calls as quickly as possible. 4. Take a meal break (Code 7) fr om 30-60 minutes long unless th ere
are pending priority calls. (Ther e will be no more than two ma rked
units at the same place and time per General Orders.)
C. End of shift
1. Onview or Log Off no more t han 30 minutes before end of watc h
unless there are pending priority calls.
2. Prepare any reports and/or book any evidence from the shift.
Reports may be delayed until the following day unless it is the
officer’s last day of the workweek.
3. Fuel and park vehicle, marking the parking location on the v ehicle
assignment board in the C.S.I. office.
4. Refrain from accruing overtime , if at all possible, by compl eting
reports and booking evi dence during the watch
