COMMUNICATIONS CENTER RECORDERS AND TAPES
The purpose of this order is to provide a uniform policy for us e of the Communications
Center recorders and maintenance of tapes.
I. Policy
The Communications Center shall operate the recorders pursuant to department
needs and in accordance with Feder al Communications Commission mandates.
It shall be the responsibility o f the watch supervisor or desig nee to ensure the
operation of the recorders and maintenance of the daily tapes. It shall be the
responsibility of each watch supe rvisor to be familiar with the operation of the
recorders and tape maintenance policy. Recorded tapes will be k ept for a period
of time, depending on the supply, unless it is necessary to mai ntain them longer.
II. Department and Federal Commu nications Commission (FCC) Mand ates
One transport of the primary recorder (blue) and one transport of the secondary
recorder (beige) will be oper ational on a 24-hour, seven-days- a-week basis
recording specific designated ar eas within the Communications Center.
A. One tape transport on the prim ary recorder will contain the formal 24-hour
record. The other tape transport on the primary recorder that i s not in use
will be kept on “auto change” sta tus in case of failure of the recording tape
transport.
B. One tape transport on the se condary recorder will be used as a backup
when both tape transports of the primary recorder fail, or as a reference
source for immediate retrieva l of critical information.
C. All areas within Communi cations will be recorded.
1. Department policy mandates the recording of all telephone st ations.
2. The FCC requires all radio tr ansmissions to be taped or othe rwise
documented.
