Field Services Page 1 of 5 02/08 (REV 4/17) Retraining and Reorientation The purpose of this order is to e stablish guidelines for retrai ning and reori entation of officers, when they retur n to Field Services. I. General Field Services recognizes that there is a constant change occur ring as procedures, policies, and techni ques are refined and updated. In order to return an already competent officer or s ergeant to patrol duties, a pe riod of retraining and reorientation is necessary. II. Deputy Sheriff- Previously assigned as a Patrol Officer wit hin the last year. The following procedure shall be fo llowed for those officers re turning to patrol who previously compl eted the SSD formal Patrol Training Program and have been out of a patrol assignmen t for less than one (1) year. A. Officers shall receive a copy of the Field Training Guide an d be assigned to a minimum of two Field Trai ning Officers (FTO) and/or Field Training Officer- Provisionals (FTO-P) for a minimu m of four weeks for r e- familiarization. Daily observa tions reports (DOR) will be compl eted by the FTO’s. B. Officers shall be responsible fo r learning the material set forth in the Field Training Guide however; the gui de does not need to be signed of f by the Field Training Officer. C. The patrol pre-test , which is required fo r new patrol traine es, will not be required. D. The Field Training Officer sha ll have the discr etion, on a c ase-by-case basis, to extend the Patrol Train ing Program of any officer bey ond the minimum requirements set fort h above. This may be done when th e extending Field Training Office r deems such to be in the best i nterest of the department and the individual o fficer. Two or more satisfa ctory progress evaluations are requir ed for finalization, but need no t be consecutive. E. Officers who fail to satisfact orily complete the minimum req uirements set Field Services Page 2 of 5 02/08 (REV 4/17) forth above shall be so advised during the course of an exit in terview, which shall be conducted in the manner prescribed in Section V. F. To ensure consistency in the application of the criteria out lined above, the Chief Deputy of Field Services or designee shall be the final d etermination regarding the appropriate level o f reorientation training on a case-by-case basis. This determination will be made in conjunction with a recommendation by the Field Trai ning Coordinator, which may req uire assignment to the formal FTO Retra ining Program outlined in thi s order. III. Deputy Sheriff- Not assigned as a Patrol Officer within th e last year The following procedure shall be fo llowed for those officers re turning to patrol who previously completed the fo rmal SSD Patrol Training Program , were assigned to patrol but have been out of a patrol assignment for more than one (1) year. A. Officers returning to patro l after being absent from a patro l assignment for more than one year shall complete a condensed Patrol Training P rogram. These absences shall include TDY assignments, 4850, etcetera. B. The condensed Patrol Traini ng Program will be a minimum of e ight (8) weeks and 32 daily observation r eports (DOR) completed by a min imum of two Field Training Officers (FT O) and/or Field Training Offi cer- Provisionals ( FTO-P). C. Officers will take and pass t he Phase One and Phase Two exam inations prior to moving to the next phase. D. The Field Training Guide mus t be completed and signed off by the Field Training Officers. E. Officers shall be responsible fo r learning the material set forth in the Field Training Guide and shall success fully pass the final comprehens ive examination wit h an 80% or better at the conclusion of the prog ram.
