Time Off Schedule
The purpose of this order is to e stablish policy for scheduling time off for patrol officers.
I. General
For the purpose of this order, ti me off shall be described as a ny absences that
are scheduled in advance.
A. Vacation
B. Compensation time off (CTO)
C. Holiday-in-lieu (HIL)
D. Training and military leave
E. Worker's compensation (4850 time)
F. Sick leave - when the medica l treatment is scheduled in adva nce (surgery,
doctor's examination, and etcetera.)
G. Parental leave
II. Calculation of Allowable Time Off
A. The number of officer’s allo wed off shall be determined by s ubtracting the
total number of officer’s norma lly assigned to the watch from t he minimum
staffing requirement of that wat ch as determined by the divisio n
commander.
III. Additional Personnel
A. Watch commanders may count o ther personnel assigned to the w atch on
a temporary basis but must add t hose officers to what is expect ed as a full
compliment prior to calculations.
B. Patrol trainees who are in phase ii or iii will be counted t o the full
compliment, but they will not be co nsidered when granting a tra inee a
scheduled absence.

Example:
Two officers from the boat patro l are added to day shift patrol during the
winter months. The minimum staffing level is 4 officers.
Normal full compliment 6 Added boat officers + 2
Total 8
8 – 4 = 4
Four (4) officers allowed off.
IV. Conditions and Restrictions
A. All planned absences are to be considered time off positions . For
example, of the four-d ay shift positions available in the above example,
positions for vacation, CTO, HIL, training, worker's compensati on,
etcetera, must be considered as time off positions.
Example:
1. Smith - CTO 2. Jones - vacation 3. Allen - worker's compensation 4. Brown - training
B. Watch commanders or sergeants may not exceed the maximum num ber
of officers allowed off as dete rmined by the calculations, unle ss approved
by the division commander o r an authorized designee.
