Briefing
The purpose of this order is to o utline the briefing procedure and assign responsibility
for maintenance of t he material used.
I. General
Patrol officers will attend a fo rmal briefing at the start of e ach watch in order to be
properly informed of assignments and information prior to going into the field.
A. Officers are to report fully d ressed in the appropriate unif orm by the start
of briefing for their assigned wa tch. Officers shall be advised of their
assignments, unit numbers, and t he name of any reserve officer or ride-
along assigned.
B. An exchange of questions and id eas between officers and supe rvisors on
particular problems and/or inciden ts affecting the watch is enc ouraged.
C. Structured in-service traini ng shall be conducted during bri efing periods as
time permits.
D. Officers and uniforms will be visually inspected prior to or during briefings
to ascertain compliance wit h department regulations.
E. The supervisor assigned to c onduct the briefing is to review all briefing
material (bulletins, directives , operations orders, memos, and etcetera).
II. Briefing material
A. All information pertinent to t he patrol briefing is to be pl aced in the briefing
binder.
B. Briefing information may consist of:
1. Missing person bulletins
2. Crime bulletins
3. Daily crime bulletins/weekly crime summaries

5. Inter-office memos
6. Bolo's (all-points bulletins)
7. Training information
8. Any information directly affe cting law enforcement or depart ment
personnel
C. If an officer has informati on of an urgent nature it will be brought to a
supervisor's attention for appr oval, and if appropriate, placed in the
briefing binder.
D. Each division shall develop and implement a policy for the m aintenance of
the briefing binder. This poli cy should minimally include:
1. Reviewing and updati ng information in the briefing binder on a
regular basis.
2. Purging briefing informati on for destruction or filing.
