Training Page 1 of 3 2/03.0 (REV 3/91) RECRUIT TRAINING OFFICER The purpose of this order is to describe the duties and respons ibilities of the Recruit Training Officer. I. General Under the direction and supervi sion of the academy director, th e recruit training officer is responsible for the following: A. Keeps class attendance records. 1. At the beginning of each schedul ed class session, the class squad leaders will report whether or no t all recruits are present. Th ey will give this information to the platoon leader at the formation pr ior to the start of class. The platoon leader will give this informati on to the recruit training officer. 2. The recruit training officer will record the attendance info rmation on the appropriate attendance sheets. B. Maintains class discipline. 1. The recruit training office r will supervise the day-to-day a ctivities of the recruit training class. The recruits are responsible for performing in accordance with t he standards set by Sacramento Sheriff’s Department General Order s, the Division of Training a nd Reserve Forces Operations Order s, and the Academy Rules and Regulations. C. Counsels recruits on per sonal and academic matters. 1. The recruit training officer is the academy recruits’ immedi ate supervisor. The recruit training officer shall keep himself/her self aware of all phases of the recr uits’ training and their perform ance in all areas. 2. The recruit training officer will review each recruit’s perf ormance with the recruit during academy training. These scheduled, form al review sessions will be docum ented in the fo rm of “Scheduled Counseling” sessions. Training Page 2 of 3 2/03.0 (REV 3/91) 3. Counseling sessions held as a result of a rules violation or other deficiencies will be documented in the form of a “Documented Counseling” session. The document ation from both scheduled counseling and documented counselin g sessions will be reviewed and signed by the involved recrui t and the academy director. D. Maintains personnel files on each recruit. 1. The recruit training officer is responsible for maintaining an academy training file on each o f their recruits. The file inclu des, but is not limited to: recruit pers onal information, academy test f orms and results, radio code quizzes a nd results, report writing mid -term and final examinations, inter- departmental correspondences to o r from the recruit, etc. E. Supervises recruits i n building clean-up. 1. The recruits, at the end of each day, are responsible for cl eaning the academy training buildings prior to their departure. They a re responsible for leaving all build ings in an acceptable conditio n for use the next day whether or not t hey used the building that day . The tasks and cleaning assignments for each squad will be poste d. F. Obtains films and ot her audio-visual mater ials for instructo rs as needed by the academic coordinator. 1. The academic coordinator sha ll obtain from each instructor a list of films or audio-visual material s the instructor will need. The academic coordinator will make arr angements for these materials to be available from the various law enforcement libraries. Whe n necessary, the recruit training officer will pick up or return these items for the academic coordinator. G. Supervise recruits in close order drill. 1. The recruit class will be form ed into a platoon and into squ ads. The recruit training officer will be responsible for teaching the r ecruit class the rudiments of marchi ng and military co urtesy (referenc e US Army FM 22-5). 2. Once a recruit is identifi ed who has sufficient military bac kground to continue this instruction, the re cruit shall act as the class d rill instructor. Under the supervisi on of the recruit training offic er, the drill instructor will dr ill the class and move them in formatio n. Training Page 3 of 3 2/03.0 (REV 3/91) H. Monitors instructors’ classroom presentations. 1. The recruit training officer shall monitor the presentations of the academy instructors on a random basis. The recruit training off icer will evaluate the content of the material, presentation format and applicability, and the general be havior of the recruit class. I. Supervises video recordings of selected classes. 1. The recruit training officer , as requested by the academic coordinator, shall videotape the pr esentation of selected class es. J. Maintains video library. 1. The academy maintains a colle ction of video tapes for use by academy instructors, recruits , and members of the department. These tapes contain information applicable to the instruction presented during the academy. 2. This library also contains r ecordings of specific class inst ruction. These tapes are used by recruits that may have missed a class a nd wish to review the material, o r by other members of the departm ent who wish to update their knowl edge of a specific subject. K. Review recruit writing assi gnments for accuracy and complete ness. L. Assist with orientation class for new recruits. 1. Prior to the start of a new r ecruit class, an orientation cl ass is held. At this time, new recruits are presented with their recruit han dbook. 2. During the orient ation class, the recruit training officer
