TRAINING ACADEMY DIRECTOR
The purpose of this order is to describe the duties and respons ibilities of the Training
Academy Director. I. General
Under the direction of the academ y commander, the Sheriff’s Tra ining Academy
Director is responsible for coor dinating all activities at the academy. This involves
an on-going process that may be de scribed as planning, implemen ting, and
evaluating all academy-relat ed duties. These duties and respon sibilities are as
follows:
A. Oversee the development of ac ademy curriculum and drafting t he
program into a tentative schedul e. The director coordinates sch eduling
with the San Juan Unif ied School District to avoid any conflict over use of
the facility.
B. Oversee the development of t he daily recruit training schedu le.
C. Oversee the scheduling of the academy program in logical seq uence so
that instruction builds in com plexity throughout the program.
D. Oversee implementation of the program and provide recruits a nd
instructors with an or ientation explaini ng student and instruct or
expectations.
E. Conduct staff meetings to review each recruit’s performance during the
program and direct the developmen t of special remedial training sessions
for recruits having diffi culties with the program.
F. Review and evaluate recruit, s taff, and instructor performan ce throughout
the program. Prepare pr ogress reports concerning problems with logistics,
staff, recruit academy adjustment s, academics, arrest and contr ol
techniques, driver training, ph ysical conditioning, and firearm s training, as
needed.
G. Responsible for initiating any personnel actions resulting f rom recruit
performance at a level below t he standards established by the d epartment
and/or POST.

H. Oversee planning for recruit g raduation including coordinati on with other
agencies, obtaining a band, devel oping the program, and orderin g special
award plaques.
I. Direct and evaluate the academy program which is the basis f or planning
future programs. Instructor per formance is evaluated with an em phasis on
areas indicating problems with training quality and presentatio n. After
evaluation is completed, planni ng for the next academy begins.
J. Direct the effort to ensure t he program continues to meet co ntemporary
needs. This involves site visits to other training academies th roughout the
state.
K. Represent the department at POS T Commission meetings, legisl ative
hearings, POST consortium meeti ngs, and meetings with the Calif ornia
Academy Directors’ Association.
L. Evaluate recruit performance in simulated field problems and assist in the
supervision of these exercises.
M. Conduct, monitor, and evaluat e tours of the facility.
N. Assist in preparing contract ual agreements between the acade my and
areas shared for training purpos es with allied agencies.
O. Assist allied agencies in c onducting background investigatio ns on recruits
or graduates.
P. Maintain liaison with the St ate of Californi a Department of Industrial
Relations, Division of A pprenticeship Standards.
Q. Monitor and direct the Apprent iceship program for the depart ment. Act as
the chairperson for the Apprenticeship Committee.
R. Supervise, direct, and ev aluate all academy staff.
S. Counsel recruits in special circumstances; e.g., poor academ ic
performance bordering on dismissa l; excessive performance in
delinquency notices; or any defici ency that may lead to expulsi on from the
program.
